The success of WhatsApp, in addition to the simplicity of the mechanism and the immediacy of the service, also came from the large number of platforms on which the app is available: not only the "usual suspects" Android and iOS but also Windows Phone, Windows 10 Mobile, BlackBerry, Nokia S, Symbian and many others.
As of the end of 2016, however, WhatsApp has decided to sever the umbilical cord with platforms that, by now, have practically fallen into disuse: the company has in fact decided to discontinue support for BlackBerry (including, alas, also BlackBerry 10), Nokia S40 e Nokia S60; goodbye also to Android 2.1, 2.2 and Windows Phone 7.1 starting late 2016.
When we started WhatsApp in 2009, the use of mobile devices was very different from today. The Apple App Store was only a few months old. 70% of the smartphones sold at the time had operating systems from BlackBerry and Nokia.

While these devices have been an important part of our history, they do not offer the possibilities we seek to expand the functionality of our app in the future. It was a tough decision to make, but it's the right one to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family and lovers using WhatsApp.
Surely this news will be able to make some users of those parts of the world blather where the old operating systems, especially those of Nokia, still have a good part of market share, however the company's move is also understandable - given theevolution already faced e what Facebook has in store for it.
