How to beat Dynamax Mewtwo
Before going into battle, this Max Raid is a bit different from the others, as you can't catch Mewtwo when you beat him. Instead, you'll just get a number of great rewards for completing it. This is something you will definitely want to know before you try this battle, so you aren't particularly disappointed in the end after barely defeating him.
While most raids in Pokemon Sword and Shield can be beaten with just you and three AI players, you certainly won't be lucky against Mewtwo. The first step is to have a group of three people participate in this raid, whether they are friends or using locations like the in-game subreddit or Discord channels to find people to try it out with.
The Mewtwo you will be facing in his Dynamax because in these raids is an absolute beast, having a level 100 and a number of different attacks that can hurt you. In fact, Mewtwo has more than the usual four moves, so you'll need to be prepared for a number of them. Mewtwo also has a lot more than psychic moves, as he can suppress attacks like Fire Punch, Earthquake, Brick Break, and Rock Slide as well. As a result, your only chance in this fight is to launch your four level 100 Pokémon, each with useful items that can aid you in battle.
Not only can Mewtwo put on shields to protect himself, but he uses moves like Bulk Up and Calm Mind to make him even stronger. As a result, you will definitely need to have some sort of protection yourself. This is where you need someone who can install Light Screen and Reflect very early in the game, with Angoliath being a fantastic option here, especially if he has the Pransker ability. Angoliath is a Dark / Fairy type so you have a good advantage over Mewtwo and you can hope to survive most of his attacks without any of them being super effective. Using Taunt before adjusting the Bright or Reflect screen can also be a good idea. Along with the strike and the ability to get shields quickly, having multiple Grimmsnarls in battle can even be an effective strategy here as well.
On the other side, having Marshadow around can be very helpful in battle. If you are going to use Marshadow, you absolutely must have Spectral Thief as one of its moves. This is the main reason you will be using Marshadow as it can remove buffs which can really help you against Mewtwo.
More on the offensive side of things, using Dawn Wings Necrozma with an assault vest and certainly the Moongeist Beam move. It will be the most powerful attack against Mewtwo and use it until she disappears. You just need to be very careful, as Mewtwo has pressure and will reduce your PP from attacks used. Use PP Up to help here or try to avoid using this attack on the Shield, as those are more wasted uses of stronger movement than anything else. Having Dark Pulse as a save is also useful when Moongeist Beam's PP is depleted.
If you go for a range of Angoliath, Marshadow, and Dawn Wings Necrozma, that leaves one more Pokémon to be part of the party. For this one, you could go with two Angoliath or maybe even a Tyranitar. Tyranitar might be vulnerable to some of the attacks Mewtwo uses, but he's truly a tank and can handle some of the stronger moves Mewtwo offers, while still being invulnerable to his psychic attacks.
If you aren't able to take down Mewtwo in your first or even subsequent tries, don't give up. This raid is easily one of the toughest battles in the entire Pokemon series, so follow the strategies above and go take out Mewtwo before he leaves Max Raids at 18:59 p.m. ET on March 1.
