Microsoft Chromium Edge for Mac is now available.

Contrary to what one might think, browser development is still bubbly, despite the bulk of the Mac world being split between Apple (Safari) and Google (Chrome).

We've already discussed the impact of the announcement that Microsoft stopped developing its engine and switched to using Chromium (basically, the same one used by Chrome).

That approval gave the open source engine a boost that took it a long way in market share and thus influence in deciding where standards go.

Some have even relied on the bygone days of Explorer and its extensions to shut down the rest of the browsers, which - with Chromium being run as free software - doesn't seem likely to happen these days.

For business users who are still stuck in the past on websites that require Internet Explorer, Microsoft's Edge browser includes an "Internet Explorer" mode that will allow them to continue accessing their proprietary content.

While Edge isn't able to import Chrome extension history and sync right now, Microsoft has ensured that these features will be built in throughout 2020.
