Whether you're a video or podcast enthusiast, you've probably thought about using your iPhone as main tool for registration. Obviously we share the choice, as the Apple smartphone lends itself very well to the management of the aforementioned contents. However, the desire to update your device and perhaps combine it with more professional accessories used for a specific purpose is not excluded.
We are obviously talking about external microphones and the evolutionary step that these devices are able to give to their contents. In this buying guide, we will therefore focus on the audio factor, going to list the best microphones to pair with your iPhone.
RODE
When it comes to microphones, one can only consider “RØDE”. The “VMML” version is specially designed for devices with a Lightning connector, whether they are iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. There is also a jack input from 3,5mm for wired earphones and a preamplifier with DA converter (24 Bit / 48 kHz). A really great iPhone directional microphone.
There is also a version with Lightning input designed for the newer iPhones that do not have the 3.5 mm jack. Among the most popular iPhone microphones and it is also the one I use on a daily basis.
Shure MV88
Even the “Shure MV88” has similar characteristics to the “VMML”. In fact, it has a Lightning connector and integrates perfectly with iPhone thanks to its certification “Made for”. Among its most important features we find: compatibility with the excellent app “ShurePlus REASON” and a durable and stylish metal design.
Samson METEOR
Before abandoning ourselves again to RØDE's proposals, let's dwell on a slightly different microphone from the previous ones. We are talking about the "Samson METEOR", which is a portable device, but which also hides integrated supports, very useful for recording audio at home or in the studio. Its only flaw is the USB-A output only, easily bypassed with a Lightning cable or iPhone adapter.
RED Wireless GO
Just as promised, we're back with RØDE and its best-selling “Wireless GO”. Probably the most appreciated by those who always want to have their hands free from the iPhone, but still want to count on a professional audio recording. The only one on the list to be able to count on a wireless sector with a battery life of about 7 hours and a range of well 70 meters.
RED VideoMic Go
Perhaps more difficult to manage on smartphones the "VideoMic Go", designed mainly for use on video cameras, but still universally valid for all devices with jack input from 3,5mm. In this case it will therefore be necessary to also buy an adapter, but only for iPhone models starting from 7. An excellent iPhone ambient microphone.
RED i-XY
Now let's go back to the microphones built specifically for use on the iPhone. Model “i-XY” it stands out from the others for a modern design and a double capsule, perfect for recording sessions as a couple. Designed and built on the basis of the structure of iPhone 5 / 5S / SE / 5C but also perfectly compatible with the most recent models.
Zoom IQ7/IF
We close with a cheaper alternative to RØDE's bidirectional microphone seen in the previous paragraph. Also in this case it is possible to count on a double capsule that can be positioned vertically and horizontally. The only real flaw: the companion application, little updated and difficult to manage on the new iPhones. However, it can be used as an excellent hardware device alongside well-developed third-party apps.
