Well, it's official: Steve is now the most complex Smash character to date - at least in our eyes. This Vol. 2 DLC fighter not only has a unique set of abilities for impaling enemies, but it also has a crafting table for additional trouble. From building railroad tracks to diamond swords, the character can do more than one can keep up with. So here's a guide to each of Steve's moves and functions.
Moveset
Regular movements
- Neutral attack: Sword Swing
- Using the attack button, a sword swing is performed. However, if the button is held down, Steve will swing several times.
- Smash side attack: Side sweep
- The movement is similar to the neutral attack, but can be charged to inflict a deadly strike that will launch enemies.
- Air attack / air attack: Ax swing
- The movement is similar to the Sword Swing, but as an overhead movement, players can juggle an opponent in the air with each stroke.
- Dash attack: Pickaxe swing
- This swing is like any other swing, but once done an opponent will throw back.
- Advanced air attack: Front air attack by pickax
- Steve's advanced air attack is almost a mirror of Kirby's, as a block of iron will fall on an opponent's head when swinging.
- Rear air attack: Air attack by pickax
- Think of this as an advanced air attack, but will launch others left or right, instead of descending. So makes it a great move for throwing enemies.
- Air attack: Anvil
- This move also drops an iron block on an opponent. However, being a top-down aerial attack, Steve will be at the top of the block for additional launch range for enemies.
- Tilt down attack: Fire
- The movement brings a temporary fire in front of you - similar to PK Fire. As you can imagine, this is also great for blocking projectiles.
- Smash Up Attack: Magma block
- A large block of hot magma is placed above the character for a short time. This can be used as a shield for air attacks.
- Smash Down Attack: Lava bucket
- Steve sets down a bucket in which lava pours over enemies and throws them short distances.
- Grab: Fishing rod claw
- Players can reach long distances to attract other people using the rod fishing line. When successful, opponents will be locked in by a damaging fence for a short time.
- Throw back: Throwing fishing rod
- The cane line is used as a rope that lightly throws opponents a medium distance.
- Throw forward and up: Piston
- A piston is activated and throws enemies in the given direction at close range.
- Throw down: Anvil
- The anvil can also be used here, but the launch range is not as important.
- Taunt: The only provocation revealed so far is that of Steve devouring a big steak in front of enemies. Very intimidating.
- Sauter: Steve is not known to be a high jumper. In the presentation, it is shown that he cannot even jump off a pedestal in Battlefield unless he uses his mid-air jump.
Special movements

- Neutral special: Mine
- Mining is a must for Steve. Materials mined from the ground are needed for some Basic Attacks, Upgraded Weapons, and his Railing Attack.
- Special Neutral Mid-Air: Create a block
- When you press B in midair, a block appears under Steve. We recommend using it to block enemies on a platform or to avoid falling below.
- Special side: Mine cart
- Requiring iron and wood, the cart can be used as a means of transport or for a weapon to overflow and launch opponents.
- Special Up: Elytra
- When used, Steven gains wings that can be used to fly short distances. It also sends enemies flying when they crash into it. No hardware is needed for this.
- Down special: TNT
- This special places a block of explosives in front of you. You can then detonate the block from a distance. If attacked, it will explode on impact.
- Smash final: Boom house
- This Final Smash powers Steve with a big piston that sends the others flying through a house full of creepers. The house will then explode and those trapped inside will be launched.
Crafting strategies

When mining, you will notice that the material given to you directly reflects the soil you dug up. There are four types of materials to look for (from lowest to highest grade): wood, stone, iron, gold, and diamond. There is a limit to the amount of material you can carry, so be aware of your stock. With the materials you have available, a tool can be crafted from the Crafting Table - which can be summoned by activating your shield and pressing B.
To get high level minerals, like gold or diamonds, players will need to continuously touch one spot until they appear - which takes a lot of patience.
Craft weapons
The item you receive is based on the highest quality ore in your inventory. For example, no matter how much wood or stone you have, if you have the diamonds you need for a diamond sword, this is what you will get. Speaking of the diamond sword, when crafting the powerful weapon your pickaxe and ax will also be diamond.
As you can imagine, crafting with a higher grade mineral means extra damage on one of the weapon based attacks. But it doesn't just stop at weapons and tools.
Skins
Screenshot via Nintendo's YouTube channelThere are eight skins, in total. Besides its default skin which you usually see in Minecraft, there will be two additional skins for the classic cult character. One appears to be Steve in tennis clothes and the other is his in a Scottish kilt.
Players can also choose to play as Alex, a female counterpart to Steve. The character will have three individual skins. On top of that, Enderman and Zombie are also playable skins, but none of these three types of character skin will change Steve's original movement. It is purely cosmetic.
