* UPDATE 16/02/2020: Well, that statement just happens to have aged like milk, right? After a weekend of continuous maintenance, the servers are back and largely functioning. That said, beware of matchmaking issues for the next few days. I also updated the section on story progression as this was a server bug and not a design choice that prohibited players from sharing progress while running. same story quests. *
Up to four players can team up in Wolcen, and multiplayer can be configured through the Friends List or in-game settings.
First of all: make sure you play a character online: the offline character cannot be played online. After that, the easiest way to play multiplayer is to go to Game Settings under Play and select Audience on the right. This will suit you to anyone at your level - friend or stranger. If you are looking for a quick pick up game this is the easiest option. If you prefer to play with friends and friends only, keep this setting on Private.
To play with someone you know, look for the friends list icon visible in the lower right corner. Once you click on it, a list of your friends will appear. Or, failing to assume you haven't added anyone yet. There is a simple solution: click Add Friends and enter your friend's name to send a request. You'll need the number associated with their name (and you can see yours at the top of the Friends list), so you'll want to communicate with the people you want to play with.
Once your friend accepts your request (or yours), they'll show up under Friends online or offline (depending, well, if they're online or not - although they should be if they are. just accepted or sent a request). At this point, you can play multiplayer together. Someone will need to send the invites though, as you can't just join someone's multiplayer game. However, you can send invites in-game, so don't worry if you or the host are in your own worlds. That said, with server issues, invitations to the game can bug, and if they do all you and everyone else need to do is go back to the character select screen and send invitations from there. the.
Remember that you can only play with four players at a time. Additionally, the Host Story will be what everyone else is playing, but it won't undo your own progress if you're further or further than the Host in your own story. If you are working on the same quests, the game should share the progress. You will keep the items earned, skills found, and levels earned, but no story progression (you do get rewards for completing the host's quest, though). It's a great way to upgrade to the power level, by the way. Again: only four players!
