Persona 4 Golden has appeared on Steam, much to the surprise of PC gamers everywhere. Persona 4 Golden is a mind-blowing RPG, and seeing it appear on PC with a good port quality is a welcome surprise. The main issue people have with the game is some lag in the cinematics and some pretty aggressive stuttering while the cutscenes are playing.
At the moment, there is no official word on a fix for this. Some people have used programs like Nvidia Control Center to set the game's maximum frame rate to 30 FPS, which they say fixes the issues. Unfortunately, this limits the maximum FPS you'll get anywhere in the game to 30 FPS, which isn't really something most PC gamers want to endure. Unfortunately, that seems like the only thing that will work, and even then, it doesn't seem to work in all cases.
Other potential ways to alleviate the problem that players have reported performing well include:
- Make sure the game is installed on an SSD
- Run the game in windowed mode with no border
- Make sure your GPU drivers are up to date
There are many theories about the problem, with some people blaming the Denuvo anti-tampering technology that comes with the game, which has a somewhat substantiated history for negatively impacting how games work. Others believe that the problem is a mismatch between cutscene resolution and display resolution, and that is the root of the problem.
The only silver lining is that wearing Person 4 Golden definitely seems like a demanding job. Maestro Porter Peter “Durante” Thoman, who made Dark Souls on PC playable for everyone, was quite impressed with the work done on his port scan for IGN. The game supports both arbitrary resolutions and frame rates, which is a strong indication that everything going on with the cutscenes for some people is a bug or an error, rather than a lazy port.
As such, we hope to see a fix arrive that will fix the issue, but unfortunately this is not guaranteed.
