It's been 17 years of waiting, but MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is here. The developers at Piranha Games have finally taken breaks from some bulky war machines, and a new single-player adventure has arrived. The game will launch on PC through the Epic Games Store, and you might be wondering if it is releasing on consoles.
At the moment, the answer is no. Currently, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is a PC-only game and will only be available on the Epic Games Store. Piranha Games showed interest in bringing the game to Xbox One during a question-and-answer session at Mech-Con 2018. Piranha Games founder Russ Bullock responded to a fan question on the topic, stating that 'they "would like to see MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries on Xbox One". Bullock cited the Xbox One's mouse and keyboard support as the reason.
MechWarrior games typically feature the complex and elaborate control schemes for the various titular Mechs functions, so it's no surprise that this doesn't translate very well for a controller. At the time, there were just no plans to launch on a console, and Bullock said the team was focusing on the PC version in the run-up to launch. Could you see the game go console in the future? It certainly looks like Piranha Games would like to do that at some point.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is set in 3015, during the final decade of the Third War of Succession. Players will once again step into the role of a MechWarrior Rookie Mercenary. As always, you'll be tracking money from battle to battle, completing various contracts for the game's many factions. For now, if you want to try and become the most notorious mercenary in the system, you'll have to play on PC, but a console version might arrive at some point in the future.
