How to disable "Ok Google"

It will have happened to you too at least once a friend of yours has called theGoogle assistant on his smartphone and by mistake it also activated on yours. To overcome this problem, we decided to make a tutorial in which we will explain exactly how to disable "OK Google". In this way, you will limit the functioning of theGoogle app. In addition to Android, we will see how to disable the command also on iOS and PC.


How to disable “OK Google” on Android

If you have an Android device (both smartphone and tablet), you can easily deactivate the command "OK Google" partially or completely. Below you will find the directions to follow depending on the option chosen.


Partial deactivation

If you partially disable "OK Google", the command can only be activated within theGoogle app and / or in the search screen. Follow the instructions below to proceed with the deactivation:

  • Grab your Android smartphone or tablet, access the application menu and open Google. Alternatively, choose Google settings or open the Android settings and look for the entry Google.
  • At this point, click on Other at the bottom right and select Settings from the displayed screen.
  • In the next step, tap on Voice and then press on Voice Match in the section Login with Voice Match.
  • Through the proposed screen, turn the switch next to the option to OFF Login with Voice Match.

From this moment on you can take advantage of theGoogle assistant only within the search screen inside the app.


Complete deactivation

If you would like disable "OK Google" completely (therefore also within theGoogle app etc.), you can follow two paths: delete the voice model set during smartphone configuration or stop granting permission to the application to use the microphone.


In the first case, go to the screen Voice Match as indicated above and this time taped first on Delete model Voice and then OK. In this case, the option Login with Voice Match it must be active.

In the second, instead, make a long press on thegoogle app icon in the drawer (or on the main screen) and locate the button that allows you to access the screen App information. Alternatively, open the Android settings by pressing ongear icon, access the menu App (o Applications) and then identify theGoogle app.

You just have to wax your voice Permissions, plug it on and disable the switch next to the item Microphone. Remember that by disabling the microphone forGoogle app, you will no longer be able to use your voice to search by voice within the application or widget.

If you have installed theGoogle app on your iOS device, you can take advantage of the feature "OK Google ” to carry out voice searches within it. To disable this function, just follow the simple steps that we report below:


  • Grab your iPhone or iPad, open theGoogle app via the iOS home screen and then press on Other bottom right.
  • From the screen that appears, select Settings and then press on Voice.
  • You just have to disable the switch next to Hotword "OK Google" to confirm the deactivation of the function.

Just as seen with Android, you can completely disable the feature by turning off the microphone for theGoogle app. To do this, open the iOS settings by pressing thegear and then tap on the menu Privacy. Through the proposed screen, select the item Microphone and disable the switch next to Google (if it is listed).

How to disable “OK Google” on PC

Google Chrome proposes the possibility of searching on the PC by voice (and therefore exploiting Google Assistant) by pressing onmicrophone icon placed on the home page of the browser or in the Google search bar.

If you want to disable this feature, you can do it very easily using the settings of the popular browser. Let's find out how to do it:

  • Open Google Chrome, click on three: dots present at the top right and select Settings give the menu to compare.
  • Once this is done, click on Advanced and then press on Settings place within the section Privacy and security.
  • Now, in the section Permissions, press on Microphone and then press on basket present next to the items concerning Google in the section Allow. In this way you will have revoked the authorization for the use of the microphone.

In case of second thoughts, you can return to take advantage of Google's voice searches by pressing on the microphone in the search bar and choosing Allow from the message that appears on the screen.


To permanently block Google from accessing the microphone, you will need to select Block rather than Allow from the previous message. To unlock the feature again, access the menu Microphone of the settings of Chrome (as reported above) and press on basket present in correspondence with the items concerning Google in the section Block.
