Episode # 4 of our column "how to take better photos with iPhone". Today a "basic" but fundamental topic to which I wanted to dedicate a video because, in my opinion, if you understand well how to master the "AE / AF lock”You can take your iPhone photography to the next level.

In the lines below we will trace some of the concepts we saw in the video, so that you can focus them on these key points and take home some really interesting shots. Let's start:

The focus is BASIC!

Although the iphone is definitely a camera phone, able to take really beautiful shots, if used incorrectly it might give you a bad impression. Focusing on a photo, we know, is basic and in most cases iPhone focuses on the central part of the image.

How to do it though, if we want to focus on another element and make the photo more artistic? Fortunately there is the AE-AF lock which is present on practically every smartphone and which allows you to lock the exposure on a precise point of the composition, so as to remain focused on that subject.

How to use the AE - AF lock

To use this handy feature, all you have to do is touch your finger on the area you want to focus on. To understand well, let's put the case of having a photo where in the foreground there is a flower and in second floor there is a panorama. Our intent is to focus the landscape and blur the flower:

So let's touch the background and we will see a yellow square appear. at the top you will notice a box with writing Blocco AE / AF which once selected will lock the exposure in the frame you have selected. Doing so even if someone passes in front of the camera or if something moves, iPhone will always continue to focus on that area:

The result is a photo where the focus is exactly where you wanted: below for example there is a photo where the focus is in the background, and another photo where the focus is on the flower in the foreground:

Other useful tricks

Once you have mastered AE / AF lock, you can add a few more as well tricks that we have seen in the other episodes. For example, you can use the Burst mode, that is, hold down the shutter button to take many more photos and then choose the best one.

Another trick is to change the exposure: once you have focused on a point of the photo, with your finger swipe on the screen in order to increase / decrease the brightness level of the photo, so as to enhance lights or shadows. Finally, don't forget to always carry a comfortable bag with you tripod like these:
