Differences between Groups, Supergroups and Telegram Channels

Among the many features that made Telegram's fortune - and which were then taken up by many other messaging platforms - the Telegram groups they are certainly one of the most important. Together with chatbots and stickers (now also animated), groups are the hallmark of the platform designed by Russian developer Pavel Durov, allowing thousands of people to exchange messages, voice messages and files with each other in a simple and immediate way.

In particular, Telegram groups are distinguished from those present on other platforms (such as WhatsApp, for example) for their versatility. Sifting through the various options and tools of the app, in fact, you will soon discover that there is not just one type of Telegram group, but three: groups, supergroups and channels. Even if they share some basic aspects, these three types of collective chats provide different tools and options. Let's see together what are the differences between groups, supergroups and Telegram channels.

What are Telegram groups and supergroups

Telegram groups are collective chats to which up to 200 users can participate at the same time. Just like "single" conversations, within a group each participant can send messages, files, voice notes, stickers and any other content allowed by the platform. Over 200 subscribers (and up to a maximum of 200 thousand), And Telegram groups become supergroups, but the features are in fact the same.

The creator of the group and any administrators or moderators he wishes to appoint can manage the collective chat by choosing from the various options available to them. For example, they can choose to pin a message containing the group's "netiquette" at the top, so that members can read it every time they enter it, or delete and edit messages for all subscribers and not just for them.

In this last case, thanks to the unified history which, if activated, will allow new subscribers to read all messages exchanged in the past, up to the moment of their entry. Also, thanks to mentions, replies and hashtags it will be easy to find the ones that interest you most in all the messages. Thanks to smart notificationsFurthermore, you can silence the group and choose to receive a notification only when you are mentioned by another user: this way you can avoid being disturbed by particularly chatty members.

Access to Telegram groups depends on the privacy level set. If a group is public, anyone can find it thanks to the platform's internal search engine and register independently; if a group is private, you will only be able to join if added by the administrators or by receiving an invitation link.

What are Telegram channels

Compared to Telegram Groups and Supergroups, Channels are a one-way communication medium. Only those who created the channel - and other managers - can send messages, while subscribers receive without being able to comment. They are then used to send communications on various topics, such as e-commerce offers, latest news and so on. The deleted messages will no longer be viewable by any user, while the universal chronology is active and available to all subscribers.

Like groups, too Telegram channels are divided between public and private. The former will be accessible to anyone and can be searched through the platform's internal engine. The latter, on the other hand, can only be accessed if you are added by the administrators or if you receive an invitation to join them.
