Basic concepts and notions
Let's start by clarifying a simple but fundamental concept: the main means of earning on YouTube are advertisements, consequently the more views you have on a video, the greater the revenue that the latter brings to its author.
To insert advertisements in the videos, monetization must be activated on your channel, a procedure that can be completed in two ways: by asking for the partnership official directly to YouTube (which then collects the money from the sponsors and then turns a fee to the YouTuber based on the views of his videos) or by contacting third party networks who - to put it simply - act as intermediaries between YouTube and the creators of the videos avoiding a lot of useless waste of time. But we will deal with this in a few moments.
First it is good to clarify the criterion by which YouTubers are rewarded. This criterion is the CPM (cost per thousand impressions) and that's the amount sponsors pay YouTube to view their promotional messages for every 1000 videos. The figure varies according to the months but taking an average for last year we can say that it stood at 7 euros, therefore 7 euros, gross, collected for every 1000 views on a video with advertising.
At this point it would be natural to wonder if all videos can be monetized and all channels can get a partnership. The answer is, unfortunately, no. In order to make money with videos on YouTube, you must respect the rules of the portal, you must therefore post your content with a certain frequency (let's say at least one video a week), you must not insert copyrighted music or video fragments in your productions ( unless you have permission), you must not copy videos from other channels, you must not post violent or sexually explicit content, etc. In a nutshell, you have to behave well!
Official partnership
Having clarified these fundamental points, I would say to find out in detail how to activate the monetization of videos through the official partnership. The procedure for obtaining the "green light" for monetization by Google is quite long and cumbersome, which is also why third-party networks have been successful, but still far from impossible to complete.
Before explaining step-by-step how to proceed, I want to tell you that to participate in the official YouTube partnership program, you must meet specific requirements. It used to be enough to have 10.000 total views on your channel to participate; but from 17 January 2018 the requirements to be met have become much more stringent since it is necessary to have a minimum of 1.000 members to your channel and well 4.000 hours of watchtime in the last 12 months.
To start monetizing with YouTube through an official partnership with the online video giant, the first step you need to take is to click here in order to connect to your account management panel.
Now make sure that the channel you own has a good reputation, both in terms of copyright and in terms of community standards. Then check that next to the entries Community guidelines e Copyright there is a green dot. If not, I'm sorry to tell you but… you won't be able to request monetization of videos.
Then click on the button Activate at the item Monetization in order to send your request to become a partner through monetization by placing ads on your videos.
If you are unable to access the section Monetization of YouTube to request the inclusion of advertising in your videos you can click here and fill in the appropriate form proposed in its entirety.
On the page that will be shown to you at this point, press the button Enable my account then add the check to the three boxes in the final part of the box displayed in the center of the web page and finally click on the button I accept >>.
At this point, choose the available ad formats and then press the button Monetize. Personally I suggest you leave the ticks on the items In-video overlay ads e Skippable video ads or in any case to press on the voice Preview to get a clear view of what it is before deactivating.
Once you have completed these steps, if everything went well and, consequently, you are accepted into the partner program, YouTube will automatically add ads to all your videos. If it is not possible for one or more videos you will be shown a specific notification.
Later you can still activate the advertising banners in your videos by accessing your channel, selecting the item Video management which is located at the top left, by placing the check mark next to the movies on which you want to activate monetization, by selecting the item Monetize from the menu Actions and indicating the types of advertising to be displayed in the movies you have chosen.
Keep in mind that before activating advertising, YouTube will verify the content of the videos through a procedure that could last up to 24-48 hours and, in particular cases, it could request the sending of information proving that you own all the rights to use certain content commercially. For more details regarding the possibility of becoming a YouTube partner, you can take a look at the reference web page of the guide of the service which you can access by clicking here.
Earnings from advertising on videos uploaded to your YouTube channel are paid into your account Adsense (if you remember well I talked about it in my guide on how to earn with AdSense) and you can redeem them once the payment threshold set by the service is exceeded. For more information about it, I suggest you click here in order to consult the appropriate information web page attached to the official Adsense guide and the Google page which explains how to become a YouTube partner.
Third party networks
Now that you finally have a clearer idea of how YouTube pays for videos, it seems only right to provide you with all the necessary explanations regarding third-party networks, whose collaboration practices are much more hasty. The external networks, as I have already told you, act as intermediaries between the user and YouTube "lending" their partnership with the portal to collaborators deemed suitable.
In exchange for this speed (usually it takes a few days to get the partnership) you have to leave 20-40% of the profits derived from advertising on your videos to the network, but there are also bonuses deriving from collaboration that allow you to create more interesting and increase the views.
Many networks, in fact, offer access to audio tracks or other copyrighted audiovisual material for which they have obtained exclusive usage licenses, promote the videos of collaborators on social networks and in some cases even provide products to review in the videos. Not to mention the fact that they can provide assistance when you have copyright reports or need technical support.
To find the most suitable network for your channel, you can search for the services used by the most famous YouTubers using the platform SocialBlade which you can access by clicking here. Once the main SocialBlade web page is displayed, just type the username of a YouTuber in the bar located at the top right and click on the button Search. Alternatively, you can consult the ranking of Check these top 100 network present on the same website by simply clicking here.
There are many types of networks, both cittàn and international. There are some generic and other thematic ones, such as those dedicated to gaming or technology. The important thing, if you decide to take advantage of this solution, is that you choose a reliable network and also carefully evaluate all the terms of the collaboration (first of all the duration of the contract).
As far as payments are concerned, these are always made on the basis of YouTube's CPM through AdSense or other channels which may vary from one company to another.
