Best alternatives to Google Photos

Best alternatives to Google Photos

We know well why you find yourself here reading this article, and we have to admit we never wanted to write it. But alas Big G was very clear: Google Photos will be paid starting June 1, 2021, and this means that we will no longer be able to use the unlimited storage space of this application for free to make a backup of our photos and videos. In this article, therefore, we want to advise you on what are - in our opinion - the best alternatives to Google Free Photos the payment.

More specifically, we will show you some services or applications that offer one free storage space (often limited) reminding you that it will always be possible to purchase a premium plan - often very cheap - that allows you to extend the space available to make a backup of all your photos / videos.

Google One

Google One is the backup service of the Mountain View company, within which there is obviously also Google Photos. In fact, it is fair to remember that, starting from 1 June 2021, Google will provide you with a free storage space of 15GB which, if you have not filled it yet, you can continue to exploit for free until its saturation. Only from then on will you have to purchase a subscription to continue backing up your data. The Google One subscription is one of the cheapest, because it starts at 1.99 Euro / month (or at a discount of 19.99 Euro / year) to have 100GB of additional storage space, support services and other ad hoc features for premium members.

Amazon Photos

Perhaps, currently, the only valid alternative to Google Photos that we could consider "free". Well yes, because the concept is very clear: unlimited photo storage for Prime customers. More and more people decide to subscribe to an Amazon Prime subscription, within which we have many advantages: free shipping on millions of products, fast delivery, early access to offers, Amazon Prime Video (for movies and TV series), music, free applications and then also Amazon Drive to take advantage of unlimited photo backup via Amazon Photos on any device (including Windows and MacOS). Note that the Amazon Prime subscription costs around 36 Euros / year, but you can pay it half by subscribing with Amazon Prime Student.

dropbox

dropbox it is one of the best known backup services, and not surprisingly. From the site we read in fact, that Dropbox allows you to perform automatic backups for photos, videos, screenshots and document scans. All together with the Dropbox Transfer service to share large files. It is therefore one of the most famous alternatives to Google Photos but, unlike Google One, here we have a free storage space of only 2GB (called Dropbox Basic), which can become i 2TB - or more than 2.000GB - at around 10 Euro / month. We especially recommend it for those who need to store lots of photos or large files.

Microsoft OneDrive

Another interesting alternative to Google Photos is Microsoft OneDrive, a well-known service that in recent years has evolved a lot especially in its versatility and ease of use, given that it is accessible from both smartphone and PC. In fact, a free Microsoft account is enough to access its platform and have its immediately available 5GB of free storage for backing up your photos (and other files). Obviously, in case they are not enough, there is always the 2 Euro / month premium plan as an alternative 100GB or 69 Euro / year for 1 TB, so very similar to Google One. Convenient is automatic backup through the smartphone app, not only for photos but also for videos.

iCloud

Many think that iCloud is intended only for users of Apple devices, but obviously this service it can be used by everyone. In fact, among the many alternatives to Google Photos, there is obviously the Apple counterpart: performing a backup on iCloud also includes being able to save your photos or videos using a space of 5GB free storage. Again, you might consider buying a premium subscription to get more space - around 1 Euro / month for 50GB - thanks to which you can save not only photos and videos, but also contacts, notes, emails and various files. Obviously the backup is automatic if you use an iOS device (such as iPhone or iPad) while it will have to be done manually if you will use it from a Windows PC.

Use a NAS!

NAS (network Attached Storage) go far beyond simple storage functionality, offering an unlimited number of convenient possibilities for family or multimedia. Furthermore, there are often many smartphone apps available (combined with the NAS), including one that allows you to upload photos / videos from your smartphone to the NAS automatically making them accessible even remotely (just like Google Photos).

If you already have a NAS then this solution is practically free, but if you don't have one and have been thinking about buying it, well we can only recommend it! This type of device is super versatile and allows us to backup any type of file or database from any type of device: it's like having a personal Cloud, reachable from a PC or smartphone wherever we are. Definitely one of the best alternatives to Google Photos!
