When the first The Last of Us launched for PlayStation 3 in 2013, the story-driven post-apocalyptic game developed by Naughty Dog was a huge hit. On a lesser note, many players enjoyed the game's multiplayer mode. Factions was a team mode using various survival, stealth, and combat mechanics from the single player experience. When The Last of Us Part 2 launched for the PlayStation 4, it didn't come with a multiplayer part. Are we going to see one in the future? And if so, when can we expect it? We haven't learned any new details from Creative Director Neil Druckmann, but he says it will be worth the wait.
Druckmann said so following the conclusion of The Last of Us Day on September 26, formerly known as Outbreak Day before the COVID-19 outbreak. The Last of Us Day takes place on the same in-game date as when the zombie virus first strikes and sends the entire world into chaos. The informal holidays are a community celebration with game fans and developers. The creative team behind the project typically posts limited edition content, posters, and a lot of things that fans can grab for a short period of time. A good handful of players had asked if they could receive an update on multiplayer, but all of Druckmann kept it brief on his Twitter.
“Thanks to all the wonderful fans for an amazing #TheLastofUsDay !,” wrote Druckmann. “Your positivity and love is incredibly inspiring. Oh… and about that other thing… be patient. It will be worth it. "
Unfortunately, Druckmann doesn't talk about what The Last of Us Part 2's upcoming multiplayer will look like, how different it will be from the first, or even a date. It just hints that the team is working hard on the project. Because The Last of Us 2 was released in mid-June 2020, we might expect it to be closer to winter 2020, or even the new year 2021. For now, we're left to speculate. until one of the developers comes up with hard facts. In the meantime, players can replay the single-player campaign with more difficult difficulties or try out the Permadeath mode that came out of the free Grounded update for August.
Thanks to all the wonderful fans for an amazing #TheLastofUsDay! Your positivity and love is incredibly inspiring. Oh… and about that other thing… be patient. It will be worth it. ❤️
