Twelve years after the release of the original Spelunky, the franchise is still going strong. The indie title received praise for its 2D simplicity, randomly generated caves, and engaging gameplay. A sequel for Spelunky, Spelunky 2, is currently in the works and it looks like after a year of delay players should expect the title to launch in the very near future.
But before we get to the heart of the matter when fans of the Spelunky franchise can expect the sequel to launch, let's briefly revisit the story of Spelunky 2. Mossmouth, the developer of the original Spelunky, has officially confirmed a second Spelunky title at the Paris Games Week Event 2017. A year after this announcement, Mossmouth said in a gameplay trailer for Spelunky 2 that the new game would launch sometime in 2019.
However, this did not happen. Derek Yu, the lead developer behind Spelunky 2, said in a Twitter post last August that while game development is going well, "the density and detail of the game takes more time." While Yu added that Mossmouth was "close to target" for the game's release, he confirmed that the title would not be released in 2019.
After months of silence, Yu, in a PlayStation blog post last March, highlighted some of the new improvements that will be Spelunky 2. He later added that the game was closer to a launch, but that it was not. would once again confirm a release date. A month later, on Twitter, Yu confirmed that Spelunky 2 will launch sometime in 2020. Yu didn't give us a specific release date, however, but added that he would in the near future.
