The first time this feature was introduced was to choose between Dratini, Machop, Rhyhorn or Vulpix on February 1, 2020.

Voting for this community day involved players spinning Pokestops on voting day in the game itself in an attempt to find a quest that represented one of the four Pokémon. Completing the quest during the day would count as one vote for that Pokémon. This way of voting proved difficult, as not everyone could complete the research that day, and the reliance on Pokestops meant that players in rural areas would have a harder time finding the quest for the Pokémon they wanted. However, requiring people to play the game to vote ensured that the Pokémon chosen was the one that best represented the interests of the community. The results came back with Rhyhorn at 39,3%, Dratini ~ 24,3%, Vulpix at 22,4% and Machop at 14%. After Rhyhorn took the spotlight on February's Community Day, none of the other Pokémon contestants returned as options for future Community Days.

    Vote on Twitter

Obviously, Pokemon Go decided to make voting a little easier for everyone. The next Community Day vote took place on Twitter on May 23, 2020 between, Gastly, Sandshrew, Squirtle and Weedle.

The vote on Twitter recorded 671633 votes, resulting in Weedle getting 34,1% of the vote, Gastly just behind with 32,3%, followed by Squirtle with 22,8% and Sandshrew with 10,8%. This vote was new for two reasons: first, it took place on Twitter rather than in the app itself, and second, it featured two winners rather than one. While Weedle earned the spot as the June Community Day Pokémon, Gastly ended up being defined as the July Community Day Pokémon.

The question that remains is does this mean that there is hope for the runner-up of the first vote, Vulpix? The other candidates could also be candidates for future votes!

A new vote for Community Day has been announced and will take place in August with the Caterpie, Charmander, Grimer and Porygon options. While we still await more announcements from the official Pokemon Go Twitter, one can suspect that the vote will be similar to the last one. The vote will likely take place on Twitter itself, the first place Pokémon will be featured on Community Day in September and the runner-up on Community Day in October.

As you prepare to vote for your favorite Pokémon, here are a few things to keep in mind:

    • The vote will take place during a single day.
    • Porygon is the only one of the four options that doesn't have a shiny version on Pokemon Go.
    • Charizard will get two Mega Evolutions at some point in the future.
    • All four Pokémon belong to Generation 1 and can therefore be sent to Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu / Eevee and Pokemon Sword and Shield.
    • Charmander once had a community day where she learned about Blast Burn.
    • Charizard may not receive Blast Burn, but rather a new Community Day move if chosen.
    • Alolan Grimer could also be featured as part of his community day.
    • Caterpie's low evolution cost makes it ideal for EXP farming.

I will personally vote for Porygon as it is rare to find in the wild and difficult to obtain in other games. Plus, adding shiny new Pokémon to the game is always better. Ultimately, it's up to you, so pick your favorite and vote!
