Since the release of the first film in 2018, there have been rumors and denials about a possible Tomb Raider 2, new proof of Alicia Vikander as the iconic Lara Croft. To update fans on the progress of the project was the Swedish actress herself, during an interview granted to Collider:
Pre-COVID, I would have said yes. And now I think it's still a yes. There is no green light, but the script is in the making and I think everyone is excited. I'd like to revisit Lara again.
Alicia Vikander went on to talk about the script of Misha Green, chosen to write and direct Tomb Raider 2:
It is very recent. Now the world is up and running again [the script is being written], Misha is on board and working on the script. So I'm looking forward to reading something.
Waiting for Tomb Raider 2
Roar Uthaug directed the first Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander. The film grossed nearly $ 275 million at the box office and in September 2019 it was announced that Ben Wheatley (High-Rise) would join the franchise, directing the sequel with a release date set for March 2021. Due to the pandemic, filming was postponed and Wheatley abounded the project. In its place, Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green, who signed as Wheatley's replacement in January 2021, has arrived. Waiting to hear more about Tomb Raider 2, here's the synopsis of the first chapter:
Lara Croft is the proud and independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who passed away when she was still a very young age. Now a 21-year-old young woman, devoid of any real goal or purpose, Lara wanders the chaotic fashionable streets of East London working as a bicycle courier, barely making the rent money. Determined to find her own path, she refuses to take command of her father's global empire, just as she firmly rejects the idea that he is truly gone. Advised to face events and move on after seven years without him, not even Lara can understand what drives her to finally solve the mystery of his death.
