Jupiter & Mars Review: Let's dive into a virtual sea

Over the years on PlayStation VR we have found how much the marine experience is preparing for the world of virtual reality, giving an incomparable involvement with other means. This is the case, for example, of the demonstration demo contained within PlayStation VR Worlds, Ocean Descent, in which the player was lowered into an underwater cage to be able to admire every detail. That's how the boys thought of Tigertron realizing Jupiter & Mars, available exclusively for PlayStation VR for a few weeks now.

Following a brief presentation, we are immediately immersed (literally and otherwise) in the seabed. What Jupiter & Mars focuses on is certainly one of the most dear to humanity over the last few years: we are obviously talking about global warming. The planet Earth of Jupiter & Mars is completely submerged. There are two dolphins, one of which obviously played by the player, called Jupiter and Mars respectively.

Jupiter e Mars

As Jupiter, we will therefore be joined by Mars throughout the game, whose control is obviously relegated to artificial intelligence. The experience of the game itself is based precisely on the cooperation that will take place between Jupiter and Mars: each of them will in fact be associated with certain skills, which will be used to continue within the adventure and to complete all the planned objectives. Jupiter will have the power of momentum which will allow him to save various animals present in the seabed, stranded in the plastics left by man. In addition to this, he will be endowed with the power of echolocation, to continue in the game levels: there will in fact be no maps, and everything will therefore be based on the instinct and sensory abilities of the dolphin. Mars will instead be entrusted with the more analytical part of the game, with the possibility of finding objects.

What first catches the eye in Jupiter & Mars is certainly the technical sector: it is well-finished and colorful, despite the clear graphical downgrade for the PlayStation VR version spoils the general experience a little, compared to the normal version. The color choices are absolutely spot on and undoubtedly return a good general glance, but we would certainly have liked more polygonal details for the virtual reality version.

The involvement offered by PlayStation VR in Jupiter & Mars is certainly high, allowing you to completely enter the marine world and leaving the real world out, with an almost psychedelic and at times dreamlike feeling.

To further embellish the game world there are the neon finishes, which add a touch of brightness and elegance to the seabed.

Accompanying our gaming sessions will be a rather toned soundtrack environmental, which will not override the experience but rather will support and allow the player to relax further, with slow but at the same time cheerful and lively rhythms.

Unlike many other PlayStation VR titles, Jupiter & Mars does not need the PlayStation Move controller for its use. The commands are quite basic and intuitive, so it will be sufficient to go back and forth by pressing the triggers of the Dualshock 4 to proceed along the game levels, while the X key will be responsible for analyzing the objects and the surrounding world. Involvement is further guaranteed by the first-person view, which gives a close point of view to the experience. Our adventure companion Mars will allow us to overcome various obstacles, by pressing the circle button.

Towards new horizons

In fact, exploration is one of the cornerstones on which Jupiter & Mars is based, unlike many other more action-oriented titles. The purpose of the game will be for example to verify. There is also a chromatic system that will allow you to discriminate between the different objectives within the game. Unfortunately, boredom is one of the weak points of the game: inevitably after some time, the actions will become repetitive, partly ruining the general experience of the title.

Jupiter & Mars it is, in short, a discreet experience to return to immerse yourself in the seabed: a pity for the lack of longevity and repetition of the objectives that inevitably lead to boring the player. In addition to this, the obvious graphic downgrade of the PlayStation VR version which inevitably negatively affects the overall final judgment. The game certainly leaves a nice background message, implicitly inviting the user to reflect on how much damage humanity can bring to the earth, while failing to return a well-refined experience.
