Oculus Rift was released to the end of March 2016 and it was the first consumer VR headset of the modern era. But that moment was only the beginning. Over the last few years have arrived Rift, Go, Quest, Rift S and Quest 2: Oculus has indeed released five different headsets over the past five years and each of these has allowed technological advancements e great improvements. Let's retrace the main stages of the device in honor of its fifth anniversary.
Five years of Oculus VR
The Oculus story began with Kickstarter, the campaign of crowdfunding to raise funds for DK1, which recorded i head movements and nothing else. There was no location tracking nor controller tracking. However it was still magical. Later, in 2014, Facebook buys Oculus, seeing VR as the IT platform of the future.
Rift was the first step along that road: a headset covered in fabric, with foldable headphones, for an external sensor, for an remote control it's a Xbox controller.
Oculus Touch - December 2016
I controller Touch they came out nine months after Rift. Thanks to Carbon Design's rigorous attention to detail and ergonomics, Touch has enabled gamers to enter the virtual world with their own hands. This represented a fundamental turning point for VR. Starting from the following summer, Rift and Touch were sold in bundles.
Oculus Go - May 2018
After Rift, Oculus Go was the first VR headset released by the platform. Oculus Go was born starting from the idea that led to the creation of Gear VR, creating a all-in-one device - the first from Oculus - with better lenses, longer battery life and screen resolution, a new audio solution integrated into the headset thanks to the straps.
Oculus Quest and Rift S - May 2019
In May 2019 Oculus released two headsets on the same day, an incredible event. Let's talk about Rift S e Quest. Two different visions of the future, each with a state-of-the-art inside-out tracking solution and higher resolution panels. Both offered different experiences.
Rift S it perfected the efforts previously made for PC, while the innovativeness of the all-in-one device brought by Quest offered a relatively comparable but wireless o additional hardware. Thanks to it, VR has become accessible to more people and allowed developers to reach a wider audience.
Oculus Quest 2 VR - October 2020
quest 2 it came out a year and a half after its predecessor. Its goal was to offer gamers a device top, More powerful and also customizable. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company was more difficult than expected but Oculus is still happy with the release of Quest 2.
The future of VR?
Michael Abrash has always made predictions about the future of Oculus and tried to answer this question: what will happen in the next five years? Abrash revealed that the team is exploring a lot. L'Eye Tracking, the high resolution panels,HDR, the possibility of share spaces, have more social interactions richer onesin short, really everything.
