Star Renegades Combat Guide - Crits, Pauses, Timeline, Inspection & More

Despite being deeply in love with Star Renegades, we're willing to admit that combat can be a bit confusing when you first start playing. There's a lot to take in this rogue-lite RPG, so in this article, we're going to break down the important aspects of combat and how it all works.

We'll start with the item we consider most important, inspecting enemies.

Inspect Mode

Inspect mode will show you unit stats, enemies they're targeting, types of attacks they're weak to. This is all very important information for planning your moves, as you don't want to make attacks that won't be effective or allow enemies to launch violent attacks on injured characters.

Chronology

The timeline dictates when the characters take their moves. If you choose a move, it will put your character in the timeline and you can see when your character reacts to enemies. This means that if you choose an action type and it allows your enemy to play first, you can change the action so that you can strike first. Some of your actions will push enemies back into the timeline, so you can perform quick actions with certain characters to set up another character for a more powerful attack later in the timeline. This will give you the advantage of getting credits.

Each character will have a range of actions they can perform each turn. You can find them by clicking on the character and looking at the drop-down list of actions they can take. The hover and action shows where it will place you in the timeline, while some actions will be free, like Battlecry, pictured above.

Critical bonus

If you can attack an enemy before they can perform their action, you will crit, increasing the damage dealt to them. If you can configure your attacks so that all of your characters have their actions before an enemy, all attacks will receive the critical bonus. As you can see in the image above, if a character is going to score a review this turn, they will be displayed on the timeline above their portrait.

Stagger

Staggering an enemy is the aforementioned delay of their turn in the timeline. When your attack fails and becomes enemy, you'll see them being pushed back further in the timeline at the top of the screen, so you'll be able to know what will happen before you engage in the attack. This allows you to plan your moves and set up your team to be very efficient.

Break the enemies

If you manage to stagger an enemy until the end of the timeline, it breaks them and they lose their turn that turn. With careful planning, you can focus on an enemy, smash it, and reduce damage received for that turn. If an enemy needs to be broken based on your actions, it will be displayed on the timeline.

Fury

Fury is generated by landing Crits and Breaks on your enemies. A Crit will generate one Fury, while a Break will generate three Furies. Fury is a res
