Samsung Galaxy Fold: the video review

The WOW effect

It is useless to deny it: the first impact is incredible. The feeling is that of having a totally new and revolutionary device in your hands, almost one of a kind. However, once the WOW effect has passed, it is necessary to analyze it in detail.

When closed we have a device with an important thickness (about 15 mm) and a long, narrow body that favors grip and use. In short, its resemblance to a "remote control" is actually an advantage in terms of portability and use. We have available a SuperAMOLED display gives 4,6 pixels with 720 x 1680 pixel resolution, but also the ear capsule, a 10 megapixel front camera and a full-bodied rear triptych consisting of the 16 MP ultra-wide angle lens, the 12 MP camera and the 12 MP telephoto lens.

On the edges we obviously find the on and off button, the volume rocker, the speaker and the door reserved for the Nano SIM. There is also the fingerprint reader which, however, we did not find very comfortable. In fact, its position does not allow you to easily center it, you will have to get used to it a bit.

Impossible not to mention the hinge, the real protagonist of this revolution. Yes, because the flexible display itself is nothing new. It is the hinge that makes the difference as it has to withstand tens of thousands of openings. In this case, it is constituted by a set of toothed gears inspired by those of a watch and then hidden by the special cover.

The yield of the flexible screen is really great, with vivid colors and rather high brightness. In short, using it is a real pleasure despite it the evident crease in the center. Well yes, the famous fold is there, you can see and feel it. In daily use it will give you a little annoyance but, in the long run, you get used to it. An analogous discourse can be spoken for lhuge notch located on the right: it is super bulky, unsightly and a little uncomfortable to use. Perhaps it would have made sense to steal an entire band to make room for the front cameras, a band that could have facilitated the grip of the device.

Not just news

Next to the news related to the form factor of this Galaxy Fold, we find a rather classic hardware for a top of the range: Snapdragon 855 processor, 12 GB of RAM and Adreno 640 GPU. Together with the ONE UI 1.5 and Android 9.0 they allow you to carry out all kinds of activities and guarantee fluidity and speed.

The battery is pretty standard too but don't be fooled: the 4380 mAh, combined with the low consumption CPU, allow you to get to the end of the day despite the presence of two displays.

Finally we come to the photographic sector, the same as Galaxy S10 +. So expect great shots in all light conditions and good videos in 4K at 60 fps. To learn more, we refer you to the S10 + review.

Samsung Galaxy Fold review: too big, too small

Samsung Galaxy Fold review: too small, too big?Now that we've covered the main features, let's face the elephant in the room - what am I doing with it? Yes, because the problem of Samsung Galaxy Fold in my opinion is neither the price - 2.050 euros - nor the fold of the internal display, but the form factor of both screens.

Outside we find a display too narrow that yes, it's fine to answer calls, some messages on the fly or quickly check notifications, but it turns out inconvenient for writing longer emails, messages and texts of an "I'm on my way" or "I'll call you back later".

Inside, on the other hand, you have an absolutely large screen but with the wrong aspect ratio. In a world that has become accustomed to 16: 9, 18: 9 or 21: 9, the Galaxy Fold square is in sharp contrast. Obviously it is not just a "fashion" problem. In fact, the hardware is accompanied by software decidedly devoted to verticality: Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram are just some of the apps that are based on this principle. This means that you will never take full advantage of the Galaxy Fold's internal display because there is no software that really benefits from its 4: 3.

Samsung Galaxy Fold review: buy it or not?

Let's sum it up a bit: Galaxy Fold is a device that does not go unnoticed, that amazes both enthusiasts and the less experienced and that paves the way for a future of flexible displays and devices that can change shape. Honestly, I can't wait for this to happen.

At this point you have to decide when to take this new path. You can do it immediately, spending 2.050 euros, becoming an early adopter and also embracing the defects of this device, or you can wait for prices to drop and technology to evolve. It is up to you to decide.
