A friend of yours showed you some hilarious photomontages he made on the computer and you're dying to try the same thing. Unfortunately, however, you don't have the faintest idea which ones photomontage programs use and, for this reason, you fear that you may not be able to complete your "business". But no, don't throw in the towel right away! If you want, I can suggest the right tools to use!
In the next paragraphs, in fact, I will have the opportunity to illustrate in detail the operation of some software useful for creating amusing photomontages. There are many you could turn to: some are free, others for a fee, still others can be used directly from the browser (therefore online) and then there are apps that can be used directly from smartphones and tablets.
So, are you ready to get started? Yup? Very well: make yourself comfortable, take all the time you need to concentrate on reading the next paragraphs and, more importantly, try to implement the instructions I will give you. There is nothing left for me to do, except wish you good reading and wish you a big good luck for everything!
Free photo montage programs
If you wish to use the free photomontage programs to use on your computer, let me list a few that are sure to suit you.
GIMP (Windows / macOS / Linux)
One of the first solutions I suggest you try is GIMP, the famous free and open source graphics program available for all major desktop operating systems: Windows, macOS and Linux. For many it is the best free alternative to Photoshop and, given the huge range of features and special effects included in the software, it is not too much to call it this way.
To make photomontages with GIMP, download the program on your computer by connecting to its official website and first click on the button Download xxxx and then on the button Download GIMP xxxx directly.
At the end of the download, open the file you obtained and follow the wizard that is shown on the screen: if you use Windows, click here Yes and then OK, Install e end. A Macinstead, drag the GIMP icon into the folder Applications macOS, right-click on it and select the item apri from the menu that appears, twice in succession. This operation serves to "bypass" the restrictions that macOS applies to applications from non-certified developers and should only be done at the first start of GIMP.
Once the installation of GIMP on your computer is complete, click on the entry Apri ... from the menu Fillet at the top left and select the photos you intend to use for the photomontage.
Then, if you intend to cut out a subject and "stick it" on a different background, select the item Toggle Quick Mask from the menu Select of GIMP and choose it Path toolby clicking on the icon fountain pen present in the instrument panel located on the left.
Now, try to trace as precisely as possible the edges of the subject you want to cut out, by repeatedly clicking on it. Then disable the quick mask by selecting the item again Toggle Quick Mask from the menu Select; click on the item Selection from the path on the menu Select and click on your voice Invert on the menu Select.
Now "soften" a little the selection made by selecting the item Gradient from the menu Select and, in the window that opens, set 3,000 as a value Shaded selection of and click on the button OK. Then press the button Del / Backspace on the keyboard to remove the background of the photo and paste the image onto the “background” photo.
When finished, save the montage by selecting the item Export from the menu Fillet and select the folder in which to save the photo, giving it a name, choosing the format in which to export it and so on. Other free photomontage programs
Let me suggest you too other free photomontage programs which might come in handy, especially if you're looking for some easier-to-use solution than GIMP.
- MaskImage (Windows) - this is one of the simplest and most effective free photo montage software available on the market. It allows anyone to create fun photomontages in a few simple clicks: just select the scenario to use as the basis of the photomontage, your photo to include in it and perfect the final result with the tools offered by the application.
- Photo Bunny (Windows) - is a nice free software that allows you to create funny photomontages starting from your photos and adding objects and effects of various types to them. To use it, just select the photo to use in the photomontage, choose the frame and the objects (hats, mustaches, wigs, symbols, etc.) to apply to the original image and that's it.
- Snap! (Windows) - this simple program with a very nice interface allows you to take pictures with the webcam, embellish them with personalized objects and share them easily on social networks. The free version of the program allows you to create up to 10 photomontages per day, the paid version has no limitations of any kind.
Professional photomontage programs
If you want to create quality photomontages, you can think of turning to professional programs which, although they are paid, can often be tried for free for limited periods of time.
Photoshop (Windows / macOS)
Photoshop is the photo editing software par excellence and, among its countless functions, it also includes some useful ones for creating photomontages. So if you came to this guide with the intention of finding gods professional photomontage programs, let me help you achieve your goal.
Being a professional software, Photoshop is not free: you can test its features for 7 days, thanks to its free trial version but, to continue using it, you need to subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan, which starts from 12,19 euro / month.
To download the Photoshop trial on your computer, go to this page, click on the button Free trial version located at the top right and wait for the program download to start automatically.
Once the download is complete, if you are using a PC Windows, start the .exe file you have obtained and click on the button Yes. If you use a Mac, double-click the .dmg file you downloaded and launch the executable Photoshop Installer present inside.
At this point, click on your button Subscribe located in the window that opened on the desktop and create your own Adobe ID providing all the requested data (name, last name, date of birth, e-mail e Password) and then clicking on the button Registration. Next, put the check mark on the item I have read and accept the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy (UPDATED) and click sul pulsating Continue. Finally, answer the short questionnaire that is proposed to you and click on the button first Continue and then Start installing.
Once you have installed and started Photoshop, go to the menu File> Open (top left) and import the file you want to act on. Then use the various tools integrated in Photoshop to create the photomontage. For cut out a photo and remove its background, so as to paste it on another image, you can take advantage of the selection tools and quick masks of Photoshop.
To do this, just click on the tool icon Bow (The symbol of a rope) in the Photoshop toolbar, select the item Magnetic lasso tool from the context menu, cut out the subject of the imported photo, click on the button Select and Mask located at the top right and, in the new section that opens, use the levers that appear on the screen (eg. radius e Fade), to refine the selection and “soften” the edges of the selection. To finish, click on the item OK.
Then copy the face you cut out in the original photo by pressing Ctrl + C (your Windows) or cmd + c (on macOS), go to the tab of the other open image in which to paste the face you have cut out, and press the key combination Ctrl + V (your Windows) or cmd + v (on macOS), to perform the operation.
Now you just have to move the subject you have pasted in the image, in such a way as to position it in the desired point and, when finished, click on the symbol (✓) at the top right to save the changes made. Finally, to save the montage on your computer, click on the item Save with name from the menu Fillet of Photoshop. Below I list you other professional programs that can be right for you if you want to create particularly complex photomontages.
- Affinity Photo (Windows / macOS) - a great professional photo editing software available for Windows, macOS and iOS. You can try it for free for 10 days, after which it costs 54,99 euros one-time.
- CorelDRAW Graphics Suite (Windows / macOS) - is a professional graphics and photo editing suite that includes various software dedicated to managing and creating photos, vector graphics, fonts and much more. It costs 699 euros but you can try it for free for a limited time.
- Pixelmator Pro (macOS) - this is a photo editing application available only for Mac which features a well organized single window interface, which makes it easier to use. It costs 43,99 euros.
Online photomontage programs
If you want create photomontages online, therefore acting directly from the browser, try the services that are indicated in the next paragraphs because they will surely be useful for the purpose.
Photo Funia
Would you like to make photomontages online? One of the best web services that can be used for this purpose is Photo Funia, which can be used without registration and allows you to create many different photomontages simply by loading the image to be used.
To use it, connect to its main page and, after identifying the category of your interest among those available in the status menu on the left (eg. Gallery, Poster, Celebrity, etc.), click on thepreview of the photomontage you intend to make. If you are not sure which one to choose, you can click on the buttons New e Popular to try to win the embarrassment of choice by viewing the platform's new and most popular templates.
After choosing the photomontage to make, click on the button Choose photos, to upload the image you intend to use (depending on the template you have chosen, you may need to upload more than one), and decide whether to upload from your computer, by clicking on the button Upload from PC, whether to take it at the moment with the webcam, by clicking the button Camera, or whether to use an image already present on social networks or on one of the cloud platforms supported by the service, by clicking on Online.
Once the upload is complete, crop the image to fit the photomontage, using the appropriate editor that appears on the screen, and then click on the button Go. To conclude, click on the button Download to download the output file related to the image you edited and that's it.

It will be done other services to make photomontages online, I recommend that you consider the sites listed below because they are free and easy to use.
- Photo505 - is a portal that can be used without registration and offers a very large catalog of photomontages. Among the various types of photomontages that can be created, there are movie posters, billboards, photos with VIPs, the covers of the main newspapers and so on.
- Pizix - it is a free site that can be used without registration and includes many ready-to-use templates to create photomontages, both static and animated.
- Photomics - it is a well-known online service thanks to which it is possible to create photomontages using the covers of some famous magazines (such as Forbes and GQ), to superimpose one's face on that of various famous people and to create photomontages with virtual postcards and tickets congratulations.
- Photopea - is a Web application that integrates many useful tools to retouch your shots and create, through them, some funny photomontages. Although available in a free version, I would like to point out the availability to subscribe to the Premium subscription, which starts at 9 dollars / month, which allows you to remove the few advertising banners on the page and access some additional functions.
Video montage programs

Wondershare Filmora (Windows / macOS)
Wondershare filmora is a famous paid video editing program (its license starts at 44,99 euros / year). It allows you to retouch your videos through the use of various advanced tools. It is possible to test its functionality by means of a trial version which however applies a watermark on all the generated jobs.
To download the trial of the program, connect to its website and click on the button Download located in the center of the page. When you have finished editing with Filmora, click on the button Export at the top and click on the button Create account to create the free Filmora account (as I told you, choosing this option will apply a watermark to your work) or click on the button Buy it now located under one of the plans available to subscribe to the service.

- FakeApp (Windows) - as easily understood from its name, it is an application that uses artificial intelligence to change the faces in a video, replacing them with those of other people.
- SAGA 2012 (Web) - is a Web application that allows you to create video montages by inserting your face into a sort of thriller movie trailer to share with your friends.
- Photofunny (Web) - this is an online service that allows you to create amusing video montages by inserting your face into videos on the platform.

- Face Swap Live (Android / iOS) - app that allows you to change the face in videos in real time by exchanging it with that of the other person possibly taken and with that of other characters. On Android it is free, while on iOS it costs € 1,09.
