How corruption works in Outward: The Soroboreans

Exterior: The Soroboreans DLC brings tons of new content to the vast world of Aurai with a whole new area, the Ancient Plateau. If you've just gotten off the trailer, you might be surprised to find an ominous green fog floating around some of the new locations.

As you might expect, a floating green mist is not a good sign, but it is not Dark Souls poison haze. In Outdoors: The Soroboreans, this green fog is part of a unique new mechanic called "Corruption."

Corruption has many implications in the Outward world that you will discover as you venture into the Ancient Plateau, but there are some important things you will want to know before you venture into the Green Mist.

What is corruption

Corruption is a new statistic introduced in The Soroboreans DLC. In addition to food, drink, and sleep, you can track your percentage of corruption in your vital menu, as needed. You will accumulate corruption whenever you stand in green pools of corruption fog. Staying in the Corruption Fog for about four minutes will increase your Corruption level by 25%. You can also gain corruption from various foods, potions, and spells from Mage Hex. If you sleep in a Scourge cocoon or are attacked by corrupt enemies, you will also be corrupted. Different levels of corruption will result in different effects for your character.

Effects of corruption

Get rid of corruption

You can reduce your corruption levels by taking these following potions:

  • Innocence Potion
  • Potion of purity
  • Sanctification potion

You can also run a cleanup on yourself to reduce your corruption levels. In addition, The Soroboreans introduces new foods (like sour cream, all things), equipment, and potions that can be crafted to increase resistance to corruption. The best potion for this is Quartz Potion, which increases resistance to corruption by 50%.

Of course, you might not always want to avoid corruption, especially if you go for a magical build that specializes in disintegrating spells. Whatever you do, you don't want to walk in the green fog without preparation and without information.
