Travel fast in Red Dead Redemption 2 allows you to cross great distances in a short time.
There are several ways to do this and all of them will cost you. Some require small payments every time you travel, while others require a prepayment, but allow free travel later.
This guide will show you how all quick travel modes work Red Dead Redemption 2 and how to unlock free fast travels.
Let's start by saying that the fast travel Red Dead Redemption 2 is a bit different from what you find in other open worlds where you often only need to unlock points of interest and then quickly reach them at any time by selecting them from the game map. Rockstar wanted to offer players the chance to explore the game world without them being able to use the subterfuge of the fast travel too easily. Let's see how.
How to travel fast in Red Dead Redemption 2
There are three ways to make a fast travel in RDR 2: discover the stagecoach signs, take the train and use the camp map.
You can also put your horse on autopilot, telling it to go to the point marked on the map (as in Far Cry 4).
This method is not faster, but at least it allows you to enjoy the scenery.
Fast Travel | Stagecoach signs
The stagecoach connects many places on the map and is quite cheap. The downside is that you have to be a law-abiding citizen if you want to use it - if there is a price on your head, you will not be allowed to.
Also, it can only take you to places you've already visited, so it's a bit limited. You can stop a stagecoach by interacting with the green sign at the stop.
A bit like in The Witcher 3, you can't go to a stagecoach sign directly from the map, but you have to physically reach it first and then select the sign of another city already discovered.
Fast Travel | Train
The train is much better, but it is also a bit more expensive.
You will need to buy a ticket at the ticket agent's office and you will be allowed to travel regardless of your legal situation.
You can also visit any place on the map that has a train station, regardless of whether you've already been there.
However, not all cities are connected to each other by rail, so you may need to change trains at some point.
Fast Travel | Field map
Finally, there's a map of the camp. It becomes available only later, after you have purchased some updates, but it will allow you to get free fast travels - only in one direction, though.
Interact with it, select a location and you will be transported there immediately.
You'll have to come back alone, but at least half of the travel will be free.
How to unlock fast travels from camp?
After completing the Money Loan and other missions in Chapter 2, you will unlock the account book that will allow you to upgrade your camp. It is located next to the donation box.
Select the third category, the one concerning housing (the first is medicine, the second is ammunition) and buy two upgrades.
The second is the one that unlocks the map.
It will cost you about $550 in total. The map is on the side of the carriage behind Arthur's tent.
