ASUS ROG Theta 7.1 review
If you are looking for a budget headset, the ASUS ROG Theta 7.1 they are not for you. With them 299 € - list price - are among the most expensive gaming headsets on the market. An important figure, however, justified by the quality of this product, a product made with excellent materials, which boasts a 7.1 surround and guarantees an almost extreme versatility.
An important weight and uncompromising quality
The experience of unboxing is particularly satisfying: the package opens almost halfway to reveal the ASUS ROG Theta 7.1 but they are not alone. Inside the box, you'll find another pair of breathable fabric pads, the microphone, a USB-C / USB-A adapter, and artwork.
This already tells us a lot about these headphones: we know that the microphone is removable, that the earpads can also be replaced, that the original connector is USB-C but that, inside the box, you have a classic USB extension cable that allows you to use headphones on all devices that do not support Type-C. To keep it simple: you can use ASUS 'ROG Theta 7.1 on any PC, Mac, smartphone o tablet of the latest generation and on all consoles currently on the market, therefore PlayStation 4, Xbox One e anche Nintendo Switch.
Put the box aside, we just have to tell you how these headphones are actually made. But let's start with the element that convinced us the least: weight. 650 grams is a lot and impossible to ignore. The difference with the lighter products, offered both by ASUS itself and by the competition, you will notice immediately but, mind you, this does not make the headset uncomfortable. The weight is well distributed and the headphones won't cause you any discomfort.
The Taiwanese company has done its best to ensure excellent comfort for the players: the headband is well padded and the pavilions - with ROG Hybrid technology - are in genuine leather with quick-cooling breathable fabric net. Alternatively there are the aforementioned fabric pads, more suitable for prolonged gaming sessions. In both cases, however, you will be free to wear glasses without repercussions of any kind.
The weight is then justified by the choice of materials. The pavilions are aluminum alloy, as well as the soul of the headband that uses the traditional rail system for adjusting the width.
Overall, therefore, the ASUS ROG Theta 7.1 are solid and robust, but also sufficiently articulated. We have a single pin that connects the pavilions to the headband and which guarantees a horizontal rotation of about 90 degrees.
On the design front, however, we find nothing unusual. The important dimensions, the aggressive aesthetics and the presence of the illuminated ROG logo are now typical of gaming products.
The controls are entirely housed in the left pavilion and they are reduced to a small switch and a kind of wheel. The first allows you to switch from PC to Phone mode, while the second, in addition to the volume control, performs two important functions: by pressing it once you will activate / deactivate the microphone, while a press of 3 seconds will turn on / off the RGB lighting. of the logo. Also on the left finally we have the jack to which to connect the microphone. The latter has a tiny LED on the tip which will turn red in case of deactivation.
The cable completes the overview. Which starts from both pavilions to join in the center, then becoming in woven fabric. 1,2 meters long, gain another meter with the USB-C / USB-A extension cable / adapter.

A look behind the scenes
So far we have talked about aesthetics but what is inside the ASUS ROG Theta 7.1? First of all we have 8 driver Essence al neodiminio, 4 on each side: the two fronts are 40 mm, while the others, the two sides and the central one, are 30 mm. Everyone has an answer of 20Hz-40kHz which guarantees excellent coverage of all frequencies.
On board we also have the ROG custom DAC with codec audio SupremeFX S1220A and four headphone amps, so to offer high quality 7.1 surround.
Finally we have the unidirectional microphone, which uses a dedicated processor e artificial intelligence to eliminate over 50 million background noises.
ASUS ROG Theta 7.1 review: everyday use
Now that we have pitted the peculiarities of these gaming headsets, it is time to understand how all this translates into real life.
The acoustic experience is of a high standard: the sound is balanced and clean, with full-bodied bass which, however, do not dominate the highs. Then the volume is really high and the isolation quite marked.
All these features make them perfect for listening to any type of song, from classical to electronic music, but also for the use of films and TV series.
On the gaming front you will not have any problems: not only will the sound experience be satisfactory but so precise that it allows you to identify opponents and dangers without difficulty.
And if you usually play online you will love the microphone of this headset. The noise cancellation of the ROG Theta 7.1 is truly incredible: I played with a simple film in the background, with a lawnmower in the garden, with the windows open and the 17.00pm traffic and in all these cases my teammates had no difficulty hearing me.
ASUS headphones offer all this "out-of-the-box", meaning straight out of the box. However, it is possible to customize the experience thanks to Armory Crate, the proprietary software that allows you to change the headset settings. You can define the volume, activate 7.1 surround, use the equalizer and optimize the sound for different scenarios or even for different types of games such as shooters, role-playing games or racing simulations.
The software also includes a section dedicated to Lighting, so you can decide which effect to associate with the RGB logo.
ASUS ROG Theta 7.1 review: buy them or not?
299 € it's not a popular price, but neither are the ROG Theta 7.1s. They are not born for the masses, they do not aim to enter the homes of all gamers, they do not want to conquer any type of user. The ASUS ROG Theta 7.1 are dedicated to a very specific target, to extremely passionate players or even professionals, to those who want an undoubtedly above average acoustic experience, to those who expect to be able to find enemies around corners, to those who rely on hearing to not miss a game. In short, the Taiwanese headset is a top-of-the-range product dedicated to a specific audience and designed to meet the needs of this target.
If you recognize yourself in the description, if quality is everything for you, if you are not afraid of the size and weight of the product, if versatility is important, then this is the headset for you. And, believe me, it is worth all the 299 euros necessary for the purchase.
