Windows 10: Windows Defender free antivirus becomes more effective, beta is already available

The “Windows Security” solution, which is included for free in Windows 10, is enriched with a new function allowing it to repel malware more effectively. Based on virtualization technology and called KDP, it aims to block any attempt to intrude into the very core of the operating system.

Microsoft is currently testing a brand new feature for its Windows Defender Security Suite (now called Microsoft Defender), which is an integral part of Windows 10 and comes free. Baptized Kernel Data Protection (KDP), the functionality in question blocks any intrusion attempt into the Windows kernel.

“We've seen hackers using signed, but vulnerable, drivers to attack policy data structures and install a malicious, unsigned driver,” Microsoft explains on the Security Kernel Core Team blog. “KDP reduces these attacks by ensuring that policy data structures cannot be tampered with.”

Windows 10 now offers a security suite that has nothing to envy paid solutions

Resting on the VBS hardware virtualization technology, this new feature of Windows Defender makes it possible to secure access to the kernel carried out sometimes by Windows developers, sometimes by developers of third-party solutions such as security applications and DRM management.

By reducing the number of periodic checks, especially with regard to write-protected data, KDP also makes it possible to reduce processor load. Microsoft also explains that KDP makes it easier to diagnose memory corruption bugs that don't necessarily represent security vulnerabilities. Finally, KDP should eventually encourage developers and driver suppliers to improve the compatibility and security of their software.

How to download the new version of Defender

This new feature is already available to program users. Windows Insider. The hardware configuration required to support it can be viewed on the Microsoft site. To access the Windows Insider program, you probably know the song: open the Windows 10 Settings module, then click Update & Security. In the left pane, head to Windows Insider Program, then press the Start button. After restarting the PC, search for an update from the functions Parameters > Update and security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

In recent years, the Windows Defender security suite has continued to improve, despite some hiccups with updates to Windows 10. Today, the solution delivered by Microsoft within Windows 10 no 'finally has nothing to envy paying suites, except their many adjustment possibilities (not always ergonomic) or their optimization tools. But in terms of effectiveness against malware, Windows Defender no longer needs to prove itself as shown by the results of AV Test, which regularly ranks Windows Defender among the best free antivirus.
