Windows 10: Microsoft explains why you can't remove certain apps

Some applications natively pre-installed on Windows 10 are impossible to uninstall, much to the dismay of some users. Why ? Microsoft provides explanations in support documents.

It is no longer possible to uninstall Edge Chromium on Windows 10

In several support documents, Microsoft explains why the problem is more complex than it first appears. According to the American giant, the way in which applications and services interact with each other and with the operating system sometimes prevents leaving the possibility of deleting them.

The Redmond firm recently updated a notice regarding the Chromium-based version of the Edge browser. We learn that the browser has become an essential element of the OS as a whole and not a simple independent application. Edge Chromium, for example, enables support for Web UI-based applications, such as authentication and payment gateways. This is why it is no longer possible to uninstall the browser from your PC in Windows 10, except through backdoor means, such as a PowerShell command.

Differences between in-system and optional applications

Among the other applications in this case is Your Phone. "In order to build more experiences between phones, PCs and other devices, the application cannot be uninstalled", informs Microsoft in its documentation on this subject.



The publisher nevertheless realized that users appreciated being able to personalize their experience and uninstall services that were not useful to them. With the May 2021 update for Windows 10, it then became possible to uninstall what Microsoft calls “optional features”, such as Paint, WordPad or Notepad.
