Gear sets always have a four piece bonus that chest and backpack talents now increase.
With Warlords of New York and Title Update 8, all gear sets have been revised to work in the new Gear 2.0 system. This means that backpacks and chest pieces in a gear set now have talents that make the four piece set bonus more powerful. The four piece bonuses have also been redesigned to have more impact than they were before the update, with the three piece bonuses becoming a flat stat buff.
As seen in the image above with the system's new attack and corruption gear sets, the backpack and chest grant a unique bonus to the four-piece bonus. So if you want to keep your Striker's Gamble buff with less glitter, you need to equip the backpack.
The chest piece and backpack also contribute to the set bonus, which means players have multiple ways to mix and match their gear. They can focus on optimizing one set using the backpack, chest piece, and two other pieces of the set, then pair it with two pieces from a second set of gear for its bonus to two pieces. That, or players can disable the chest and backpack altogether, and instead use talents found on high-end gear.
Add in branded bonuses, double three piece bonuses, triple two piece bonuses, and exotic armor and you will find that the gear sets remain flexible to build, but now they bring a bit of oomph with a bonus of more focused final set which should lead players to specialize in a set or two.
