The Unbeatable Daitarn 3: defending the earth against the Meganoids

Our journey into the memory of the legendary 80's cartoons continues with The Unbeatable Daitarn 3 (sometimes mistakenly called Daitan 3). After retracing the stories of several 80s cartoons and anime, including Holly and Benji, Mila and Shiro, the Tiger Man, the Great Mazinger, Ninja Turtles to the rescue, Gigi La Trottola ed Hello Spank!, So let's go back to dealing with robots, or rather, Daitarn 3, a Japanese anime television series of the mecha genre broadcast in Italy for the first time exactly in 1980.

The Unbeatable Daitarn 3: the plot of the famous 80's anime

We are in the XNUMXst century and strange events begin to occur on earth as well as mysterious disappearances of people. It will be found that behind these terrible events are the Meganoids. We are talking about hyper-technological cyborgs from Mars, which aim to enslave the human race. Meganoids were created by Professor Haran Sozo and are out of control.

At the head of this cyborg collectivity we find the evil Don Zauker, a robot with a primitive physical structure with a humanoid brain, which expresses itself in an unknowable way. At his side is Koros, his priestess and interpreter, a somewhat ruthless female cyborg.

The goal of the Meganoids and the intervention of Daitarn 3

The Meganoids want to enslave humanity and focus on the "best" specimens to transform them into their own kind. Over time their technology has grown exponentially enough to create Death Machines. These are spaceships / robots, often equipped with immense hands, which allow the Meganoid Commanders to transform into Megaborg, combat robots with an imposing size.

There is a counter to their evil plans Haran Banjo, the son of Professor Sozo. It is a young secret agent daredevil pilot of the Daitarn 3, a gigantic technologically advanced robot equipped with many special weapons able to face any threat. The protagonist has trusted allies to help him: Garrison Tokida (handyman butler) e Beauty Tachibana. The team gets rich very soon thanks to Reika Sanjo (former Interpol agent) and the little one Toppy (orphan saved by Reika in the second episode).

The plot of Daitarn 3 is a continuous intertwining of situations. Between one episode and another, the past of Haran Banjo, author of an escape from Mars full of twists and turns with the Meganoids at his heels, as well as the reasons why he decided to fight them in an extremely stubborn way. A series of adventures and combat enhance the anime, with episodes ranging from science fiction to touching adventure and ending in horror. Banjo and his companions arrive at the final battle, ready to put an end to Koros' crazy project once and for all. On their way the last, very powerful opponent, will be Don Zauker, who wants to make Mars collide with the Earth.

What differentiates Daitarn 3 from other mecha series of the 80's is the presence of a continuously playful tone, certainly atypical. Daitarn is one of the few giant robots (120 meters!) That have a facial expression. If we add to this that the anime often presents parodies of mecha that preceded it, it is clear that we are faced with a new product. There are also several in Daitarn 3 quotes from cinema, literature, comics and television.

Just think that, in episode 32, as the base of the Meganoids it is the same as the Death Star from Star Wars. Instead in episode 36 Banjo is the protagonist, in spite of himself, of psychological torture by one of the villains called Phroid, a parody of Sigmund Freud. In episode 10, again, Banjo takes part in the filming of a Kung Fu movie and so on. In a certain sense, we can say that "Daitarn 3" is a parody of the robotics, which makes fun of the various clichés in a very caricatural and humorous way. At the same time it is also a realor homage to Western cinema and American Comics.

Daitarn or Daitan: 5 curiosities

  1. The name DAITARN comes from the word "daitan" which in Japanese means courageous, fearless. It is no coincidence, therefore, that very often the famous 80's anime is called incorrectly (but not too much) Daitan 3.
  2. Banjo's father's name was Sozo, which in Japanese means "create". The name Haran Banjo means "(life) very busy".
  3. Haran Banjo, in the first Italian comics on Daitarn 3, had the name of Joe Storm.
  4. Il blinking (siren) placed on the roof of the Match Patrol does not come never used in any episode of the series.
  5. Il Daitarn 3 è one of the tallest mechas ever devised but not the highest ever. With its 120 meters of height it is beaten only by the Danguard Ace of Leiji Matsumoto (200m) and the Gunbuster of the Gainax studio (250m).
