The review of Huawei P50 Pocket, the compact folding

Huawei P50 pocket is the first compact folding of the Chinese giant. Before him, the Shenzhen company had presented Mate X and Mate Xs, which followed another philosophy. In fact, there we passed from a classic smartphone to a tablet, doubling the space available to us. Not to mention that the Mate X and Mate Xs folded backwards, with the display remaining on the outside. This allowed Huawei to have only one screen but made users a little more insecure in transport.
The idea behind the P50 Pocket is completely opposite. Not only because the screen is inside but also because of the size. In conclusion it is called “Pocket” because it is truly pocketable.

The Huawei P50 Pocket Review: What Happens When Closed?

Folded in on itself, the new foldable from Huawei is extremely compact, with a thickness of only 15,2 mm. The build quality is really high. You never have the feeling of having a not very solid or not very premium product in your hands. Moreover “Premium Edition” is the name of the only color that arrived in Italy, created in collaboration with the designer Iris Van Harpen. It should be golden but it actually changes based on the light hitting it. At times it will seem gray, at others slightly pink, at other times golden. In addition, you have a particular pattern that makes it original and, at the same time, increases its grip.

When closed, on the back we find only the Huawei logo, while the front one houses two circles. The first, positioned higher up, is an OLED display gives 1,04 pollici. It shows you time, date and notifications but, to read and answer them, you will have to open your smartphone.
The external screen also can rely on some widgets clike the weather, the calendar and Quick access to the camera to take a selfie on the fly taking advantage of the main photographic sector. “Compartment” because you can use both the main camera and - with a quick double tap - the wide angle.
You also have Mirror which allows you to carry out the Sunscreen Test, a feature that uses P50 Pocket sensors to check if the sunscreen has been applied evenly. It is a function certainly sewn on the Asian market but it can always be useful also for Italian users.

The camera

The other circle that we find on the backcover is the one that houses the Huawei P50 Pocket cameras. We have on board the 40-megapixel True-Chrome sensor, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle and a 32-megapixel ultra spectrum camera which was created to improve the color rendering of photos.

Overall the main sensor performs well, with a good color rendering, a fair amount of detail and the possibility to choose a series of presets signed by Leica.
Suffers a bit from the blur so make sure you stand still while shooting or lean somewhere.
The wide angle adds versatility to the photographic sector as well as the Fluorescence mode which acts practically like CSI luminol. You can use it to get unusual effects or to examine the hotel room.

Opening the smartphone we find another camera, the 10,7 MP front camera which, we confess, we have used very little. Selfies are much more comfortable when done with the smartphone closed, with a much higher definition and detail than what the front camera offers.

Huawei P50 Pocket open

To allow the opening of the Huawei P50 Pocket is the multidimensional hinge, the evolution of that of Mate Xs, reinforced with high quality materials and designed to close perfectly. There are no spaces. The closure is almost airtight. More you can keep it folded about 90 degrees and use it for self-portraits and video calls, turning it into a tripod of itself.

The display

Inside we have an OLED display gives ben 6,9 pollici which supports 1,07 billion colors and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The latter can be set in 3 different ways:

  • dynamic, to adapt independently to the content and save battery when possible;
  • high, so it always remains at 120 Hz;
  • standard, i.e. limited to 60 hz.

Huawei also allows you to change the mode and color temperature of the display as well as activate the blue light filter.
The result? A screen with vivid and bright colors, great overall fluidity and good brightness.

E the fold? You see and hear it. We never found it annoying though. Partly because we are certainly accustomed to the fact that it exists and makes its presence known, partly because it is very difficult for your finger to actually pass over the crease in everyday use.

Performance and autonomy

The fingerprint reader, as now happens on many folding, it is integrated into the power button and it's rapid; alternatively you can count on the unlock with the face which is just as fast.

Below the body we find the Snapdragon 888 4G processor, 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal memory, expandable via NM card. Then we have Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, GPS and the USB-C connector.
In short, there is everything you need, both in terms of connectivity and in terms of performance. You can play, work, watch movies: The Huawei P50 Pocket holds up any business without problems.

The operating system is the EMUI 12, with a clean and minimal interface, a new control panel and the Device + function to connect to other devices. There is also great attention to safety, as demonstrated by the Super Privacy Mode with which you can disable access to the camera, microphone and location when the smartphone is closed.
We don't have Google services but find Huawei Mobile Services with AppGallery.

Finally we come to batteria from 4.000 mAh that takes you to the end of the day without difficulty.

The Huawei P50 Pocket review: conclusions

Huawei P50 Pocket is a pocket foldable, it boasts excellent build quality, a nice internal display, a complete and performing photographic compartment and top-of-the-range performance. All this a 1.599,90 €. A figure that includes a free replacement of the screen and back cover and, until February 28, also the Freebuds Lipstick headphones.
It's a really cool foldable but the positioning chosen by Huawei could make his life a little difficult considering what is offered by the competition. With a few discounts, however, it could really tickle folding fans.
