The surprising success of last year's F1 Virtual GP
The rebirth of F1 Virtual GP 2021 is the result of success of the series of "virtual" Grand Prix put up in a hurry last year, but they were so liked by the spectators of half the world. As many of you will remember, the 2020 Formula 1 season was ready to start in Melbourne, Australia, when the first round of the World Championship was canceled on the Friday before the race, a few hours before the start of the race weekend. of the outbreak of the pandemic of which we all know the details.
Since then, all subsequent races on the schedule have been canceled, postponing the start of the regular season to summer. To "fill" the void left by real Formula 1, the Circus has moved into the virtual world. The platform chosen was the official game of the Queen Class, F1 2019, on which the F1 Esports Championship was already taking place. After 8 fun races from March to June, the Champion of the inaugural F1 Virtual GP was the British driver George Russell on Williams, but what really won was the show.
In fact, there were 30 million people who watched F1 Virtual GP races on average during 2020, with massive coverage on social media and online platforms. Virtual race scheduling has even reached mainstream TV, with Sky Sports who broadcast the championship races on his F1 channel with comments from Carlo Vanzini and Matteo Bobbi.
A championship open to real F1 drivers including the aforementioned Russell, Charles Leclerc, Alexander Albon and Lando Norris, a pilots of the past such as Johnny Herbert and Vitantonio Liuzzi, a star of the sports world like the footballers Ciro Immobile, Thibaut Courtois, Sergio Agüero or the cricketer Ian Poulter, up to Successful Youtuber like Jimmy Broadbent, Benjamin Daly (aka Tiametmarduk) or "ours" Luca Salvadori e Nuncio "NU89" Todisco.
How F1 Virtual GP 2021 takes place: format, platform and settings
All this, however, belongs to the past because, after last year's success, Formula 1 has decided to bring back the F1 Virtual GP in 2021, not without with some changes. The virtual “season” will be reduced to three appointments, with a different format and very particular and a renewed platform, to approach the awaited Formula 1 season of 2021, full of debuts from Alpine to Aston Martin, passing through the return of Alonso, the arrival of Mick Schumacher and the arrival of Sainz in Ferrari. But let's see the highlights of F1 Virtual GP 2021 such as platform used, tender format and so on.
On which platform will it be staged?
The game chosen for this year is, of course, F1 2020. The official video game of Formula 1, developed by Codemasters, offers excellent driving feedback and allows you to stage really exciting and interesting races. If you want to learn more about F1 2020, in the links at the bottom of the page you will find our full review of the official Formula 1 title.
Will all cars be the same? And the setups, aids and settings?
To create more exciting and fun races for spectators around the world, as usual for Esports fans the single-seaters on the track will have a level performance. To be precise, all cars, from Williams to Ferraris, will have the performance of this year's Mercedes, which is the fastest car on the grid.
However, the drivers will not be able to act on the set-up of their car either. In fact the machine setup will be the same for everyone. For the more curious, the setup used will be the default one of the time trial mode, the "Balanced" one (the third of the 5 predefined, so to speak). A simple setup, very safe and understeering and suitable for those approaching the game for the first time, but certainly not very fast.
At the level of aid then it will be the use of ABS is allowed and, for those who consider it appropriate, traction control. However, the change will be strictly manual, as well as the use of petrol and ERS. The latter makes its debut after the use of automatic ERS last year, thanks also to the simplification implemented by Codemasters on this aspect.
To avoid seeing decimated races with very few drivers at the finish line, we opted for the absence of aesthetic and mechanical damage to cars. So let's get ready to see accidents and “optimistic” overtaking for all races. Finally, the fuel and tire consumption, with the latter having however the temperature of the rubber carcass deactivated: only the surface of the tires will be subject to the temperature.
The format: qualifying and 5-lap race done by the Pros, then race with 50% of the "guests"
The big news this year, however, is theabsence of qualification. Or rather, the total overhaul of this one. One of the biggest criticisms leveled at F1 Virtual GP last year was the qualifying, which was considered uninteresting by many spectators. This year Formula 1 has mixed up the cards and has come up with a truly innovative solution.
In fact, the qualifications will be a single attempt and will be disputed by the official Esport drivers of the various Scuderie. We will then see the World Champions David Tonizza and Brendon Leigh on the two Ferraris, with the new Champion Jarno Opmeer on the Mercedes and so on. The single attempt qualification will then form the starting grid for a 5-lap sprint race always disputed by professional Esport drivers. The order of arrival of the sprint race will then form the starting grid of the “Guest” drivers.
There will therefore be one relay race between professional virtual pilots and real and celebrity pilots, with these who, having taken over the car, will then compete in one gara al 50% of the length of the Royal Grand Prix. One way to give the general public the opportunity to get to know the virtual professional pilots, and at the same time to involve the real and virtual world with a very interesting relay.
Race for Charity, the fundraising for charity
At the end of each race there will obviously be the assignment of points in the standings, following the assignment of the real F1 Championship. There will therefore be 25 points for the first place, 18 for the second, 15 for the third and so on, plus the additional point for the fastest lap. At the end of the championship, obviously, the one who has scored the most points will win.
But it's not just glory at stake. Formula 1 has indeed placed a $ 100 prize pool to be divided among the top 10 finishers, which they will be able to donate the winnings to a charity of their choice. The Alpha Tauri team from Faenza, for example, has decided to donate any prize money to the Wings For Life association of the Red Bull Group, to support research into treatments for spinal cord injuries.
The three Grands Prix: Austria, UK and Brazil. It starts on Sunday 31 January
Therefore, given the “regulation” and the format of the F1 Virtual GP 2021, let's see the dates and circuits on which these exciting races will take place. Compared to the 8 Grands Prix seen last year, this year we will see only three GPs, but on three truly exceptional tracks that are perfect for giving a show.
F1 Virtual GP 2021 started January 31st at 19pm with the Inaugural Grand Prix in Austria. The Spielberg Red Bull Ring circuit gave an incredible show, with a fight at the top between Arthur Leclerc ed Enzo Fittipaldi which saw the prevailing young Brazilian driver from Haas.
The second GP was staged on Sunday 7 February, on the historic circuit of Silverstone for the Virtual Grand Prix of Great Britain. The final race instead it will go on stage this evening, Sunday 14 February, The valentines day. A perfect evening to spend with your sweetheart, right? And like any true self-respecting season finale, it will kick off on the circuit from Interlagos to San Paolo, for the first edition of Virtual Grand Prix of Brazil.
The official drivers of F1 Virtual GP 2021: between real drivers and youtubers also two Italians
Said of the cars, of the modalities and of the charity, here are the drivers who will take part in the F1 Virtual GP 2021. Between real pilots, old glories, Youtube motorsport stars and successful sportsmen we have a lot of meat on the fire and 18 fierce pilots. Due to the absence on F1 2020, we will not see Aston Martin not even in the role of Racing Point, due to the differences between the changed title sponsors.
Mercedes: the “real” champions among forfeits, former F1 drivers and sportsmen
Let's start with the strongest on the real pitch, Mercedes. The Anglo-German team had a troubled relationship in the Virtual GP 2021. For the first race in Austria, Mercedes has chosen two experienced drivers on tracks all over the world, as well as already present in last year's Virtual GPs. Brackley's team will rely on the Belgian Stoffel vandoorne and to the British Anthony Davidson.
The 28-year-old Belgian driver finally plays, albeit virtually, the role of Mercedes driver after the failure to call for the Sakhir GP, when the team preferred the young driver of its Youth Program George Russell in his place to replace Lewis Hamilton, stopped by positivity at Covid-19.
At his side will be Davidson, a 41-year-old English driver who raced in F1 with Super Aguri in 2007 and 2008 and, twice on the podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Toyota and World Endurance Champion in the WEC with the Japanese manufacturer in 2014. Since 2012 he has also been a technical commentator for Formula 1 on Sky Sports UK.
However, the Anglo-German team "deserted" the British Grand Prix, which was raced in reduced ranks: only 16 drivers faced each other between Maggots, Beckets and Chapel. As for the Brazilian Grand Prix, the reigning World Champion team has chosen to return, but a still different approach.
Mercedes has in fact decided to participate, but with two guest stars at the wheel of its cars. On the one hand we have Jake dixon, British motorcycle rider who races with Team Petronas (sponsor of Mercedes F1) in Moto2. On the other hand we find Rohan Dennis, Australian cyclist of Team Ineos (another sponsor of Mercedes F1), winner of a stage at the Giro d'Italia. Will these two illustrious guests be able to replicate Mercedes' dominance on the track?
Ferrari: changes at every race for the Prancing Horse
Let's move on to Ferrari, who at each Virtual GP race decides to shuffle the cards. For the first race in Austria, the Scuderia di Maranello chose as standard bearers two young members of his thriving Ferrari Driver Academy, Arthur Leclerc and Marcus Armstrong.
The Monegasque born in 2000, brother of 23-year-old Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, he has already raced for Ferrari alongside Charles in several F1 Virtual GP 2020 races, forming a “national” team of the Principality. After the announcement of his presence in F3 with the Prema team in 2021, the young brother of art will try to bring the Cavallino to the top even on virtual racing fields. Together with him we had Marcus Armstrong. The New Zealand driver, fresh from his experience at Fiorano on the 71 Ferrari SF2018-H, after a year in chiaroscuro in F2 with the ART GP team will try to return to the rhythms shown in 2019 in F3, where he became vice-champion behind the another scion of the FDA, the Russian Robert Shwartzman. In Austria, the two young drivers managed to grab a third and a sixth place, with the young Leclerc who got the lowest step of the podium.
For the British GP instead in Maranello they chose two very fast “ponies” that already established themselves in F2 last year, but which are waiting for 2021 for the definitive leap in quality. Let's talk about the aforementioned Robert Shwartzman and Callum ilott, two very young prospects of the Ferrari Driver Academy.
Shwartzman, 21-year-old Russian, won the Formula 3 Championship in 2019, and last year impressed in the first part of the F2 championship, where he took home 4 wins and 2 podiums in his debut season to grab fourth place. the final. This year he will race again for Team Prema in Formula 2, attempting the assault on the title. With regard to Ilott, the 22-year-old Englishman with 3 wins and three podiums competed for the title from Mick Schumacher until the last race, and was made official as third official Ferrari driver, with the possibility of doing several Free Practice for the Cavallino.
But as usual, Ferrari distorts everything for the Brazilian Grand Prix. Greetings to Ilott and Shwartzman, Arthur Leclerc is back on track with one at his side new entry, the very young Swede Dino Beganovic. If we already know about Leclerc's life, death and miracles, Beganovic is a real novelty.
The pilot of Bosnian origin is indeed the youngest F1 Virtual GP participant with just turned 17 years old. The 2004 class is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy and will race in Formula Regional with Team Prema in 2021, the step prior to Formula 3.
All the drivers who take turns driving the Ferrari single-seaters will then be supported and “trained” by the great Amos Laurito, Coach Driver of the official Ferrari FDA ESports team and a great sim driving expert.
Red Bull, built around Albon
Red Bull shuffles the cards, deciding to change the starting couple at each race, with one certainty: Alex Albon. Alongside the new third driver of the Austrian Scuderia al Austrian Grand Prix There has been virtual in fact Jeffrey Herlings, motocross champion for the KTM Red Bull team. At Silverstone, on the other hand, the Red Bull Driver Academy driver will be alongside Albon Liam Lawson. For the final race we have another guest from the “Red Bull galaxy”, the drifter Johannes Hountodji.
It is not surprising that Alexander Albon is present. Despite being relegated to third driver for the 24 season, the 2021-year-old Anglo-Thai driver remains within the Red Bull galaxy and projects. In fact, in 2021, in addition to being a reserve driver for the Milton Keynes team, he will also be a protagonist in Red Bull Racing's debut in the renewed DTM Championship.
On the other “bull” in Styria we found the Dutch Jeffrey Herlings, four-time Motocross World Champion, just recovered from an injury after a round of the MXGP championship in Faenza. As for the British Grand Prix, alongside Albon we have his new teammate in Red Bull's new adventure in the DTM, Liam Lawson.
The very young 18-year-old Lawson will face his first Virtual GP in Great Britain, while in real life he will have a nice full 2021. In fact, he will race together with Alex Albon in the DTM Championship, sharing the Red Bull Team Ferrari 488 with the Anglo-Thai, but he will also face the 2021 F2 Championship for the HitechGP team.
Finally, in Brazil to defend the Red Bull colors together with Alex Albon will be there Johannes Hountodji, professional drifter under the Red Bull colors. Together with his brother Elias they are the protagonists of a TV series produced by the Austrian “drinkers”, Red Bull DriftBrothers. With his Nissan Silvia S15, Hountodji drives the crowds crazy in Formula Drift. Will he bring his “skidding” skills to Formula 1 as well?
Williams is serious south: Russell punta al bis
Now let's move on to the F1 Virtual GP 2020 Constructors Champions, Williams. The British team like last year is serious, e line up his duo of starting drivers, Nicholas Latifi and George Russell.
The Canadian driver will be able to use this showcase to start the season with the right attitude, while the British promise born in 1998 will certainly try to keep the title of F1 Virtual GP Champion won last year after a great fight with Albon and Leclerc. In addition, we are sure that George will be happy to be back in the fight for the win, having just touched it during his Mercedes experience at the Sakhir Grand Prix in November.
For Williams, the Virtual GP of Austria was decidedly bitter. The top driver George Russell has in fact missed the Austrian GP due to unavailability, but returned to the track in his Williams FW43 and won (on paper) the British Grand Prix. Now he is in full swing for the title even with one less race: will he be able to work the miracle?
As for Latifi, we hope that the Canadian trained during the week, especially on avoiding penalties. In fact, in Austria Latifi managed to get well 21 second penalty due to continuous cuts. On F1 2020 better not to overdo the cuts… In Great Britain it went slightly better, with a seventh place and a lot fewer penalties.
In Brazil, however, the couple is again turned upside down, and alongside Russell there will no longer be Nicholas Latifi, but the "super sub" who has already replaced Russell in Austria, the Spanish content creator Flowstreet.
Alpine among "scions" of the Academy, YouTube stars and French personalities
From one of the longest-lived teams in Formula 1 to a rookie. Alpine F1 Team he will make his debut in the top flight only on March 28 in Bahrain, as during the F1 Virtual GP will still race in the Renault livery. A situation made possible by the presence of the same sponsors from last season, not creating an unseemly sponsorship conflict. As for its pilots, Alpine has chosen a very interesting tactic. At the first race in Austria inside the drivers of the Renault Sport Academy. At Silverstone, on the other hand, that's it due YouTuber, including the French star Squeezie, while in Brazil space for others due star francesi: a great son of art and a ... comedian!
At the level of pilots, for the Austrian GP we saw the yellow-black Renault for the last time two scions of the Renault Sport Academy, Oscar Piastri and Christian Lundgaard. The Australian driver born in 2001, fresh winner of the Formula 3 Championship, will want to be seen at the dawn of his Formula 2 debut with the Prema team. On the other hand, the Danish driver of the same age will push to continue his growth, which has seen him win two races and get 4 podiums in the Formula 2 season just passed.
As regards instead theF1 Virtual GP 2021 of Great Britain, Alpine abandons the “pilot-style” approach to entrust its two Renault to two YouTuber, among which the only "pink quota" on the track so far. In fact, we are talking about Squeezie, French Youtuber with 15,5 million subscribers on the platform, e Theamusante, a young Englishman specialized in motorsport-themed gaming.
For Brazil everything changes. YouTubers outside, inside Nicolas Prost e Arnaud Tsamere. The first is the son of the 4-time World Champion Alain Prost: Nico, 39, did not achieve the same results as his father, but managed to carve out his space in Formula E and in endurance races, where he is still one of the top drivers today. He obtained three wins and a third final place in Formula E, but the peculiarity of his story is that he started racing very late, making his debut at the age of 22.
For Arnaud Tsamere, the 45-year-old comedian is one of the most loved and appreciated in France, who rose to prominence after his participation in the 2010 program On n'demande qu'à en rire. His connection with motoring is not insignificant, however. An amateur driver, the Frenchman is married to Margot Laffite, daughter of former Formula 1 driver Jacques Laffite.
Alpha Tauri very Italian with Liuzzi and Salvadori
For us Italians, however, it will be of great interest all-Italian couple from Romagna Alpha Tauri. In fact, the Scuderia di Faenza will field a couple already seen last year, made up of Vitantonio Liuzzi and Luca Salvadori.
The 40-year-old driver born in Puglia but settled in Abruzzo raced with Red Bull and with the same Alpha Tauri (at the time Toro Rosso) from 2005 to 2007. He then moved to Force India (now Aston Martin) from 2009 to 2010, he concluded career in F1 in HRT in 2011. A driver with great experience and great charisma, who will be joined by the motorcycle driver and youtuber Luca Salvadori.
The 28-year-old driver from Milan, with a community of 300.000 subscribers on YouTube and excellent results on two wheels, will want to repeat the excellent performances obtained last year with Toro Rosso. In fact, in the F1 Virtual GP 2020 he held the pace of the official F1 drivers several times.
Liuzzi in the Virtual GP of Austria had several connection problems, which left him "in the pits" for most of the race. Luca Salvadori, on the other hand, managed to confirm the excellent performances of last year, finishing the race in ninth place at the end of a good fight with Christian Lundgaard in Alpine-Renault and Jimmy Broadbent in McLaren. Both drivers have been confirmed for the virtual British GP and for the season finale at Interlagos. Will they be able to repeat Pierre Gasly's feats in Monza by the end of the season?
For Haas it is a family business: Pietro and Enzo Fittipaldi
The American Haas F1 Team confirms a regular of its experience in the F1 Virtual GP 2021 as Pietro Fittipaldi, who will be joined by his young brother Enzo.
The last two heirs of the Brazilian Fittipaldi “dynasty”, which began with grandfather Emerson, winner of 2 Formula 1 World Championships in 1972 and 1974 and two Indianapolis 500 miles, will try to carry their family name high. Pietro, 24, made his debut in the last two races of the 2020 World Championship to replace the injured Romain Grosjean after the terrible accident at the Bahrain GP. The grandson of art surprised everyone with his ability to keep up with Magnussen after almost 2 years of inactivity.
The younger brother Enzo, born in 2001, made his Formula 3 debut last year with the HWA Racelab team, and will attempt the assault on the title in 2021. He has also shown his talent in the virtual field, taking home victory in the inaugural F1 Virtual GP of Austria. His brother Pietro instead "grabbed" an excellent fifth place: these results have catapulted Haas into first place in the constructors' standings. For these excellent results, the Fittipaldi brothers have been confirmed for the British and Brazilian GPs. Will they be able to snatch the title from George Russell?
Alfa Romeo ... "defends" with the Real Madrid goalkeeper Courtois
Alfa Romeo welcomes back into its ranks the only sportsman not linked to the world of Motorsport on the grid. We are talking about the goalkeeper of Real Madrid and the Belgian national football team Thibaut Courtois. The 28-year-old Belgian giant, a great fan of engines and Formula 1, participated in most of the Virtual GPs last year, and will try to compensate for his commitment with Real and that on the track for the Scuderia del Biscione.
At his side there will be a little-known name for Italian fans, PieFace23, pseudonym of Jack McDermott. The English content creator, streamer on Twitch and present on YouTube with a channel of about 300.000 subscribers, will make his debut among the "greats" in the F1 Virtual GP 2021. PieFace23 is then the uinBoth have been confirmed for the British and Brazilian GPs.
In fact, to participate Courtois showed off workaholic skills. Thibaut Courtois in fact went on the field with Real Madrid on Saturday 6, and the following evening he put on his helmet and gave a show on the track For the Brazilian GP, Courtois will go on the field today at 16:15 against Valencia, and at 19 he will be ready to defend his excellent improvements on the track. An all-round sportsman!
McLaren bets on two famous Youtubers of the F1 world and on a "brother of art"
Finally we come to McLaren, which points up two celebrities in the YouTube motorsport world. In fact, we are talking about Jimmy Broadbent e at Benjamin Daly, aka Tiametmarduk. The first, an English content creator with a channel of over 600.000 subscribers, is an institution in the motorsport world of YouTube, as well as a seasoned driver in the F1 Virtual GPs. For now, both have been confirmed for the British GP after the inaugural race on the Red Bull Ring.
Daly, on the other hand, with his channel of over 570.000 subscribers is part of Veloce Esports, the largest community of virtual drivers founded by former Toro Rosso and Ferrari Jean-Eric Vergne. The Australian started an epic battle with Twitch streamer and McLaren driver in his spare time last year Lando Norris. Will they be able to confirm McLaren's real-life improvements in F1 Virtual GP 2021 as well?
Our “punterino” Jimmy Broadbent was also confirmed for the Interlagos GP. Instead of Ben Daly there will be for the final stage the brother of 7-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, Nicolas. However, the 28-year-old Englishman has a very particular history behind him. Affection since childhood from infantile cerebral palsy, the young Hamilton has struggled all his life to improve his condition and be able to race like his brother.
After years of care and effort, in 2011 he managed to fulfill his dream by participating in a car with modified controls in the Renault Clio Cup. After that debut, the Brit managed to become a professional driver, racing with cars with controls adapted to BTCC, the English touring championship. An incredible story, which culminates with his own debut in Formula 1, albeit virtual, in the stable where his brother also took his first steps 14 years ago.
The first race in Austria: Enzo Fittipaldi wins ahead of Vandoorne and Leclerc
The inaugural stage of the F1 Virtual GP 2021 on January 31st on the Red Bull Ring gave away emotions, overtaking and counter-overtaking, at the level of the always exciting Royal Grand Prix.
After a chaotic start due to an accident at the first corner which also involved Stoffel vandoorne, the group slowly crumbled and the rankings filled with black-white flags due to continuous 3 second penalties for cornering cuts. After a few laps the fight at the top between Enzo Fittipaldi on Haas and Arthur Leclerc on Ferrari, with overtaking and "divebombs" that inflamed the last 4 laps.
In the end, also due to the minor penalty seconds, Enzo Fittipaldi managed to keep the lead ea win his first Virtual GP. In second place a great Stoffel Vandoorne, who in the final laps, thanks to a pace of almost 2 seconds per fastest lap, took over the leading duo and to pass Arthur Leclerc, who settled for the third place.
Well Alex Albon, which on the Red Bull home circuit crosses the finish line at fourth, Thibaut Courtois. Surprisingly, the Belgian goalkeeper gets the tenth place and especially the quick ride, which earns him an additional point in the standings.
Russell returns and wins the F1 Virtual GP of Great Britain: what happened on the track
After a race on the wire of penalties in Austria, also theF1 Virtual GP of Silverstone it was decided by the 3 second data for the curve cut. On the track, Alex Albon was the first to cross the finish line on Red Bull. However, due to the penalty collected by the Thai driver, George Russell took home the victory over Williams.
The Silverstone race opened with a great start of Ilott from pole position, closely followed by Alex Albon and Thibaut Courtois. The Real Madrid goalkeeper gave away two incredible laps where he proved to be fast and able to make some beautiful overtakes, like the one outside against Alex Albon in the complex of Maggots, Beckets and Chapel. After a few laps, George Russell, who started in fourth position, overtook Albon and Courtois and started in pursuit of Ilott. The British driver held the first position for several laps, with a pace equal to the two experienced pursuers.
At the end of the race then, with Ilott who after being overtaken lost contact with the leading duo, a great fight between Russell and Albon. A fight on equal terms but useless, because of penalty of three seconds for cutting curve imposed on Albon. Russell kept the gap within 3 seconds to secure victory, but then decided to overtake his friend-rival before the Club for victory on the pitch. Unfortunately for Russell, however, Albon managed to overtake the Williams driver, securing first place on the field but giving the final victory to George Russell.
This is the fifth consecutive victory for the Williams driver in the Virtual GP in which he took part. The podium it was then completed by Callum Ilott in a Ferrari, which led a smooth and error-free race. Behind him i Fittipaldi brothers, Pietro and Enzo, the other Red Bull standard bearer Liam Lawson and the other Williams driver Nicholas latifi. Excellent race for Luca Salvadori, who started from the last position and managed to get a good tenth place. Robert Shwartzman also did well, who started from eleventh place took home eighth place, and for Benjamin Daly. The Australian youtuber, after losing several positions at the start, managed to grab the ninth place.
