"For those who dare" is the motto of Asus ROG, a simple phrase that, however, contains all the meaning that transpires even from its latest smartphone model. Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro is a mobile that dares, which tries and puts on the market very high level features. We open our review of Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro, saying that it is not a mobile phone for everyone and that, certainly, it is not even born to be. It is an expensive model, but also packed with features. It is not suitable for those who use the smartphone for calls only, but it is still very easy to manage. So, in the light of what has been said, let's start the dance with the analysis of the hardware part.
No expense is spared
The Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro spares no expense when it comes to content: we find a processor Snapdragon 888 with 8 cores @ 2,84 GHz. It comes accompanied by a Adreno GPU 660 and well 16 GB of RAM. In order not to miss anything, 512 GB are dedicated to internal memory. We do not have the possibility to expand it, but I would say that the capacity is more than abundant. There is, however, the possibility of dual SIM (two nanoSIMs). 6000mAh battery, 64MP camera and 6.89 inch screen.
We are used to them by now, but we must not forget about the side triggers. These are keys, which are not exactly physical buttons, but which respond to finger pressure. Compared to previous models, the feedback has improved and the sensation when pressing is good. Excellent audio aspect, thanks to the presence of two very well-finished speakers. The sound comes out solid and clean, better than some monitors. A few years ago, during the review of ROG Phone 3, we complained about the absence of the jack from 3,5 mm: this year ROG Phone 5 Pro is back presenting it at the bottom. Then there are the dual USB-C 3.1 ports. Obviously, the connectivity that the 5G, il Wi.Fi 6E, NFC e Bluetooth 5.2.
Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro's screen is pretty damn cool
Another gem discovered during the Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro review it is certainly the display. We find a screen AMOLED from 6.78 inches. Excellent resolution, 1080x2448p, having a pixel density of 394 ppi and a framerate of ben 144 Hz. This refresh rate allows us to enjoy videos and games at maximum fluidity. As for the brightness we have peaks of 1200 nits, while we find a touch sampling at 300 Hz. We find the HDR10 + support and the always on display.
Looking at the ROG Phone 5 Pro's display is a pleasure (that's true, I mean almost all AMOLEDs), but it really is. The details are crazy and the colors are vivid; the pixel concentration is sufficient to ensure maximum yield. We also remind you to have a resolution Full HD + on a fairly small surface: this guarantees enviable precision and sharpness. The brightness is good even in situations of strong external light and this is great, especially if you are often out in the sun. Don't worry, you can also play comfortably sitting in the garden while you tan.
Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro review: nice to look at too
The more the years go by, the more the style, pass me the adjective, “tamarro” leaves room for a more elegant style. This is not an anonymous look, absolutely, but definitely less forced. We find all the details that lead it back to the ROG line, without exaggerating. The plaque on the back is shiny and houses some writing and some lines visible mainly in the backlight. In the center, then, a small appears screen that sports an interesting RGB module. Basically, when the screen is switched on, the ROG logo is visible; through the Armory Crate it is possible to view and activate each dedicated screen. The light is bright and the detail is good. Finally, on the back, the camera appears on the left side. It is quite compact, both in terms of surface and thickness. The front camera, on the other hand, is located in the upper frame on the right side.
On the side we find the power buttons, volume adjustment, the compartment for SIM cards, two USB-C ports and the 3.5 jack mm. Of course, there is no shortage of the aforementioned speakers. The USB ports also allow video output.
The dimensions are abundant, but it is not impossible to use the smartphone with one hand. The weight, on the other hand, is 237 grams.
Included in the package of Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro, Troviamo l'AeroActive Cooler, the extra fan from Asus. This is a great accessory to use during longer sessions. It is very simple to insert and can also be used as a stand.
How are the photos?
Before we finish ours Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro review, we also took a little look at the sector cameras. That main is 64 MP, while the front one has 24 MP. There are no particular changes compared to the basic version. The photos are good, but not excellent. Overall they render the colors and the glance well, but not the details. To give you a more precise idea, however, we leave you some shots.
Gaming through software
The new Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro is equipped with Android 11, with an interface very similar to the stock one. We have a fairly captivating and distinctive theme, but nothing more in terms of use. Easy to understand, simple to view. What really makes the difference is yours X mode, which makes it the perfect smartphone for gaming. We have already seen it in previous models and we could not miss it even in this newcomer.
The X mode maximizes the potential of the smartphone and allows you to make the most of it. In addition to this, however, it comes in handy Amoury Crate, the actual management software. Through this system we will be able to manage everything concerning the LEDs on the back, but also games, screen options and so on. We can really push the ROG Phone to the extreme to maximize its in-game performance.
During the game, the mobile is crazy: it responds excellently without too many problems. The 144 Hz that are exploited by some titles are excellent. The fluidity is great, but the accuracy is also good. We can use triggers in some titles to have a better experience. Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro was born for gaming and, in this, it is very good. He did not disappoint us with any title, not to mention that he responded very well even in everyday use. Excellent from every point of view.
Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro: who should have it?
Coming to the final stages of our Asus ROG Phone 5 Pro review, it's time to draw conclusions. The smartphone is excellent in terms of performance: we find cutting-edge features, perhaps even too many for the mobile world. Excellent fluidity and great performance are the keywords that best describe the product. Aesthetically we find an attractive look, a recognizable design, but with not too much flair. In short, not suitable for everyone, but the circle expands a lot compared to the first models.
Large 3.5mm jack indent, really appreciated, excellent audio sector and excellent display. The camera, on the other hand, disappoints a little, leaving the palates a little dry. The price, of course, is not the lowest, but in line with the characteristics.
In short, a product suitable for those looking for a mobile phone to play with even away from home or during breaks from work. It is not suitable for everyone, but it responds well to specific needs.
