TF1: Free, Orange and Canal must pay for “the quality of our content”

TF1 believes that Free, Orange and Canal must pay for “the quality of our content”. Comments made by the CEO of the group Gilles Pélisson, who considers that his demands are legitimate. He explains that each year TF1 offers a better offer in terms of programs and services and that he should be paid for that. According to him, TF1 is inventing “a new model”, hence the difficulty of imposing it.

TF1 is not letting go and continues to demand that Free, Orange and Canal pay to be able to broadcast its channels accessible free of charge via TNT. During an interview with your city, the CEO of the TF1 group Gilles Pélisson justified this claim by affirming that “our legitimacy isthe quality of our content".

Not everyone will agree with this statement, but Pélisson advances his arguments. “At TF1, each year we enrich our program offering and our services, such as extended replay. We offer technological innovations such as the “start over”, the World Cup in 4K or the TF1 + 1 channel which allows you to see the programs shifted by one hour ”, he explains.

TF1 wants to make Free, Orange and Canal pay for the “quality of its content”

According to him, everyone is trying to defend their interests in this case but a compromise will eventually be found. The CSA also asks to find a quick agreement to the TF1-Canal conflict. “We're inventing a new model, and it's rarely done easily,” says the CEO.

A justification that does not seem to really hold water. The operators succeeded in reaching an agreement with M6 to take advantage of its enriched offer, which includes the services mentioned above such as replay or start over. But in this case, they did not pay for the broadcasting of the group's free-to-air channels but only for the associated options. This is all the difference. Arcep has expressed itself by indicating that TF1 should remain free for all of the country people.

But while Canal + and Canalsat have stopped broadcasting the TF1 group's channels and Free and Orange are seriously considering following the movement, it is TF1 that is taking the pressure. He would have already lowered his ambitions. Of around one hundred million euros, it now targets “a few tens of millions of euros for all operators”.
