The team revealed that when he started working on Rell, he had two basic ideas: A tank it's a support champion with a dark soul. That's not exactly enough to create a character, so the next step was predictably to turn to the artists.
Senior sketch designer Justin Albers said they loved the idea of being able to create a stand that would fill the role of a tank. Albers said it was over now a long time since the last time who had created one, from the time of Braum.
Unlike the latter, however, the team wanted this new champion to have a past it's a darker personalities. They looked at multiple options but everyone was determined to want keep the element of metal handling. At this point, they just had to decide where Rell came from and what his own might be core skills.
Rell's skills
Game Designer Stash Chelluck revealed that he wished Rell was the strongest tank ever seen. He had this idea of a character in heavy armor that makes the ground on which he walks tremble, breaking the ground beneath him by his immense power.
Unfortunately, these are difficult aspects to translate on League and they also had to make sure to respect the theme of metal manipulation. As such, they looked for ways to incorporate his ferromancy powers into the gameplay and give players the feel of a powerful champion that deals a lot of damage, without making her look like a wizard.
They wanted Rell to actually look like a tank so, in creating his armor - made of metal - they wanted to make sure that his supreme power was clear. For this reason, the metal part of her armor is massive and dark, and to compensate, they have given her a silhouette similar to that of a suit.
Rell created his armor using ferromancy and acts as a kind of cmagnetic prayer which allows her to check the metal hidden in the ground, the one it touches directly or anyone else that approaches it. What can not to do, instead, is to reach individuals hundreds of meters away on the battlefield.
VFX artist Kyle Valentin revealed that when he started working on the character, he had no idea how give clear effects to ferromancy. After experimenting with different effects and forms of light manipulation, Valentin created something that seemed unique and suitable for Rell: thechromatic aberration.
By focusing on the color distortion, the artist has managed to make it appear that the light folds differently around Rell when he casts his skills. Furthermore, by adding its distinctive colors, the yellow and red, this effect recalls the element of anger present in his personality.
