Before you can cut the red banner, Mario will need to unlock the power of Vellumental Land in. Your origami friend Olivia can harness different elements as she embodies the spirits of vellumentals - and Earth is our first. You'll need to find one in each of the five areas, and this is where you'll encounter your very first boss fight as well.
Boss fights work very differently from other battles. Instead of being surrounded, Mario will have to walk towards the boss himself. As with any other battle, you will have to solve ring board puzzles to get Mario to the right place and deal as much damage as possible.
There is much more to the Vellumental Earth Temple. If you're stuck or need some guidance, we've got all the info you need to get around the whole lair below.
Pt. 1: Find the seed of the soul | Whispering Woods | Pt. 2: Reach Peach Castle | Toad Toad | Pt. 3: Save Luigi | Graffiti Underground | Pt. 4: tons of hidden toads | Picnic route | Pt. 5: All 4 Shell Stone Locations | Overlook Mountain | Pt. 6: Fight the first boss | Vellumental Temple of the Earth | Pt. 7: Cut the red streamer | Overlook Tower
Walkthrough of the Vellumental Temple of Earth
The temple doesn't look like much, but there are a few surprises waiting for you - like exhibits! Pay 10 coins to each red chest to learn more about the Earth Vellumental. But everything is optional. You can run straight to the end.
- Hidden Toad # 58-61: Make sure to smash the large boulder near the final exhibit to reveal four folded insects. Hit all three with your hammer because they are hidden toads.
One of these three toads has a accessories store. Don't miss it! One of the bugs is slipping under a few steps, so check all the stairs for the third hidden toad bug.
- Hidden Toad # 62: Use the red exhibition station near the lampposts! All the lights will come on except one - jump into that light to reveal a hidden toad.
- Hidden Toad # 63: Under the scratch mark, click the red exposure to reveal a trapped toad. Pull it free!
At the end of the path to the Temple of the Earth, there is a wall with the Earth Vellumental symbol. Smash it with your hammer and keep going! There is a platform challenge ahead. If it looks like there's nowhere to go, descend the platform to find one near the ground. In the next room you will find an impressive turtle door, but first there is an ambush.
- How to beat Koopa Troopas: Koopa Troopas spawn inside or outside their shells! For this first battle, only use rotating movements to line up the three groups in 1 × 4 lines.
In shell form, they're much easier to beat - just jump on a shell to throw it forward, dealing big damage to all enemies in a row.
Deeper into the temple, use confetti to secure the platforms. At the back, there is another platform that you can descend to save a hidden toad.
- Hidden Toad # 64: Climb onto the platform under the entrance of the Earth Elemental Turtle. You will have to defeat the Swoops to save this toad.
Climb onto the platform on the right side of the turtle room, then jump and enter through the door. In advance, you will need to navigate pushing wall blocks.
- Collectible treasure: Rocks - Found on the bottom ledge that push rocks from the wall push you. Go right to find the chest.
To miss out on the boring trio of wall rocks, wait two cycles - on the third cycle, the rocks will reverse the order, allowing Mario to pass to the other side! On the push-rock to the right of the trio, there is a hollow alcove on the right side. Enter and go up to the cave tunnel background - there is a hidden path that leads to the exit and a save block.
In the next room, you will have to avoid spinning fire traps. Jump and wait patiently - there is a HP Core in the middle to heal if you take a lot of damage. There's an enemy encounter here too - remember, if you can't line them all up perfectly, line up as many as possible and target the Koopas first. Hopping on a Koopa shell does extra damage to everyone in a row!
Towards the end there is a large seemingly impossible fire trap! Wait until you see a fire shooter extinguished. You can hide in the alcove to get around it. Then you will run under a falling fire trap. Move Mario to get under one of the fire slits as he rolls you over!
Max UP Heart: There is a Max Up Heart in front which gives Mario +20 HP. It's super useful! Now where can we find more? It's for later.
Go back to the turtle mouth door room and remove the decal from the platform to go up. Enter through the turtle gate and don't forget to save. There is a boss waiting ...
Stand on the ledge and step down to meet the Vellumental lands! But, he was transformed into Origami. You'll need to bring the turtle back to normal before you can get the power you need to cut the red streamer.
Boss: Earth Vellumental
Instead of fighting in the center, the boss is in the center block of the circle! As Mario, you will have to enter the circle to fight the giant creature. Move the arrows (or attack markers) to create a path and select where you want to fight.
Move the circles to create this pattern - for the tutorial part you will attack the left front leg. When you launch the attack, use the hammer instead of the boots. The hammer will attack the legs - the boots will attack the shell! The shell is invulnerable to damage! Use the hammer to attack the exposed leg and deal damage.
After each attack, the boss will knock you down with multiple attacks. Make sure to keep and press [A] to block each attack or you will take a lot of damage! For the second round, move the rings in this pattern.
With two legs down, you'll be free to fight the rest of the boss. Remember that Mario must have a pointer on his first step! Other than that, aim for the other two legs. You can get hints by going past small scores, or get healing / power-ups from hearts and HP chests.
Treasure chests, if you encounter them, will generate new bonuses on the battle grid. Go through them to do more damage or get other special effects.
Target all the legs and head with your hammer. Hit all the parts and the turtle will turn its tail towards you. Hit the tail for massive damage! When all the limbs have returned to the shell, you can perform a powerful movement by reaching the new magic circle of 1000 arms! Access this circle on your next turn. Here is an example!
You can make it really simple - just place the magic circle right in front of you. You will always have at least two ring movements. Just make sure you don't waste them! If you miss, the boss will unleash a powerful mega-attack.
Hit the 1000 arms ring and you'll flip the boss, defeat him with powerful thwacks! To defeat the boss, you will earn the Earth Bibliofold and unlock the power to harness the vellumental power circles of Earth.
Use the first Vellumental power on the green ring to lift dirt and escape the temple. Olivia can now transform into the first elemental - and we can go back to Overlook Tower and lower her. Exit the temple through the green pipe!
Quest: Lower the Lookout Tower
Back outside the Earth Vellumental temple, we return to Picnic Road and all the toads have returned to their stalls. This means there are more hidden toads to unlock!
- Hidden Toad # 65-68: Talk to the popcorn vendor to the left of the temple entrance. Pay him 100 coins and he'll pop those three hidden toads!
- Hidden Toad # 69: Check the item vendor to the right of the temple entrance. On the right, he has an unnamed paper mushroom for sale. Hit it with your hammer!
Now that you are stronger, you can defeat enemies without having to fight them. Cross Picnic Road and follow the main path up Overlook Mountain. The road ahead is full of tougher enemies, but nothing you can't handle.
Useful article: I highly recommend buying the Time Plus Accessory du Picnic Road accessories store. This gives you +10 seconds or more per battle. Having a little extra time helps a lot!
- Hidden Toad # 70: Back on Overlook Mountain, you'll find a toad threatened by a bent Goomba near Warp Pipe 1. Defeat the Goomba to save him!
- Hidden Toad # 71: To the left of the Overlook Mountain Bridge, there is a path that leads to a hole. Fill it with confetti then hammer the rock wall to bring down this hidden toad.
Go to the top of Overlook Mountain and use Vellumental power at the foot of the Overlook tower! Olivia will be able to reduce the dirt. You can now enter the next dungeon - the Overlook Tower!
