Optical fiber and very high speed internet: how does it work?
Optical fiber designates a new fixed network which is based on a very thin physical medium (glass or plastic fiber) used for the transmission of IP data (over the Internet) at very high speed.
The optical fiber has a core made of transparent material within which the light "ricochets", thus remaining trapped in the cable. Thus the data, corresponding to very short light pulses, travel at the speed of light (or almost, because the speed of light within the fiber will always be lower than the true speed of light which, for its part, is measured in vacuum)!
Today, optical fiber provides a speed (data transmission over the Internet) of up to 10 Gbit / s (10 Mbit / s) at Free or in Switzerland, and thus multiplies by 000 the performance of an ADSL network. classic, especially in upload. But the problem will then come from our computers which will not be able to process such a speed of data quickly enough.
It should also be remembered that wifi limits this performance. Old wifi standards (802.11g or n) only allow a few tens of Mbit / s.
The new wifi standard 5, now widely used, approaches fiber speeds a little more with measured speeds of 300 to 400 Mbit / s
The 6ax wifi 802.11 which is starting to appear allows a little more, but does not yet reach the possibility of the ethernet cable. Until then, if you want to make the most of your fiber, connect to your box via Ethernet.
1 Gbit / s speed by optical fiber: what for?
The volume of data simultaneously passing through the Internet has increased considerably in recent years: sharing videos, photos, or watching HD movies online are bandwidth-hungry.
Benefiting from a speed of up to 1 Gigabit / s therefore makes it possible to very significantly improve these different uses of the Internet.
Optical fiber performance compared to ADSL: some concrete examples
- Download in less than a second 10 MP3 albums (almost 3 minutes with ADSL)
- Download a movie (about 700 Mega) in one second (4 minutes with ADSL).
- Share in one second a photo album made up of several hundred images (100 seconds for ADSL)
- Watch movies or TV channels in high definition or 3D with guaranteed picture quality
- Share large files on the internet in a few tenths of a second (by email or through collaborative services and online storage spaces)
- Network play on the internet with optimal response time
- HD videoconferencing
- Save and share your data quickly in the Internet cloud.
All of these tasks and activities can be performed simultaneously without the risk of slowing down throughput or losing quality.
Benefit from optical fiber at home
The fiber optic network is still being deployed in Our country.
To benefit from very high speed, it is therefore necessary to reside in a connectable area.
