Nokia 800 Tough is the indestructible feature phone of HMD Global. Or so they say. To find out if it is true that it resists drops, extreme temperatures, water and dust, we decided to put it to the test. Will he have survived?
Nokia 800 Tough: some features
As anticipated at the beginning, Nokia 800 Tough is a feature phone, that is, a mobile device that looks just like first generation cell phones. We have therefore a small display - only 2,4 inches - And sufficiently large keys to be used even with gloves.
You also have the 2 megapixel camera, 2 slots for as many SIMs (or for a SIM and a microSD), the microUSB input for charging and the 3,5 mm jack for headphones, headphones with which you can also listen to the traditional FM radio.
Under the body instead we have a Qualcomm 205 processor, 512 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal memory - expandable with the aforementioned microSD - and a 2100 mAh battery that guarantees up to 30 days of autonomy.
I know, at this point you are wondering what to do with a device without a touch screen and Google's operating system. Well, you actually have all the essentials: Kaios and 4G connectivity allow you to browse, check emails and use WhatsApp. There are even YouTube, Google Maps and Google Assistant. Yes, you can use the voice assistant to search for information on the Internet, initiate a call or even access the flashlight.
Nokia 800 Tough review: does it survive it all?
All the features that I have shown you so far are enclosed in a sturdy body, equipped with non-slip handle and the MIL-STD-810G certification. In short, in theory it can withstand everything.
But theory is not enough for us. That's why we decided to subject it to a series of tests to see if it really can withstand everything.
Extreme water and temperatures
The first test combines two different conditions: immersion in water and extreme temperatures. On paper, in fact, Nokia 800 Tough can remain at a depth of 1,5 meters for up to 30 minutes and can withstand in environments that go from -20 ° C to +55 ° C.
We therefore chose to immerse it in a container full of water that we have placed in the freezer for about 5 hours, after that we let the block of ice thaw spontaneously.
The result? We saw it spontaneously reboot after being taken out of the freezer but once it freed itself from its ice cage it resumed normal operation.
Scratches and falls
How does it deal with scratches instead? We have it thrown into a classic tool bag, with hammers, screwdrivers and even a sharp saw. Sure, it's not quite as good as new, some small scratches on the body we found it, but nothing to worry about.
Also promoted the drop resistance. During our test it did about forty from about 1,5 meters height, number to which you must add the unregistered ones. In the end it was still fully functional and without lacerations of any kind.
Powder, crumbs and… Nutella
Nokia 800 Tough non solo does not fear the dust, but not even crumbs and Nutella. Yes, we used it to spread the famous Ferrero cream on a classic slice of bread. It obviously got dirty, but a quick rinse under running water was enough to clean it.
So it's really true ...
After an intensive testing session and a few more days of mistreatment, we can confirm that Nokia 800 Tough is truly ready for anything.
Nokia 800 Tough: Who Is It For?
Nokia 800 Tough è a particularly interesting rugged feature phone: it is very resistant, has excellent autonomy and allows you to carry out all the main activities.
But who can use a device of this type? There are two types of users that Nokia 800 Tough is aimed at: workers and sportsmen. If you work on the construction site, you often find yourself in adverse environments, you have to deal with extreme temperatures and fear the safety of a classic smartphone, this is the terminal for you.
Nokia 800 Tough also goes well with lovers of extreme or winter sports, so you can take with you a tool that keeps you in touch with the rest of the world but does not need special attention.
