Nokia 8 review, the top of the range with stock Android

Nokia 8 is the current flagship of the brand reborn under the leadership of HMD Global. An interesting top, dedicated to lovers of compact, powerful smartphones with the pure version of Android on board!

Classic design, but which is characterized by elegance and excellent construction. The line that unites all the company's smartphones also gives the flagship compactness and sturdiness.

Aesthetics and display

On an aesthetic level, Nokia 8 it is a single block in 6000 series aluminum, which embraces the edges of the 2,5D glass (Gorilla Glass 5) to protect the display. One panel IPS of 5,3 " with resolution 2K, quite bright and with good viewing angles.

The size of 151.5 mm x 7.7 mm x 7.9 mm, weighing about 160 grams, allow you to easily hold the smartphone with one hand. Of course, one-handed operation is not easy, but in an emergency you will be able to perform basic tasks.
The only one physical button it is touch-sensitive and also incorporates the good fingerprint reader. To its right and left there are two backlit soft touch keys.

Hardware and software

A board Nokia 8 there is the processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, the famous top-of-the-range soc that was mounted on many high-end devices in 2017. In support, in our version, 4GB of RAM memory and 64GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 256GB by renouncing, in the versions that support it, the use of double SIM.

The GPU is the one integrated into the Soc, that is Adreno 540 and it has never caused me problems in the use of multimedia content and in gaming sessions.

Nokia (HMD Global), for all its Android smartphones, has opted for the use of stock versions of Android. The reason is simple: a pure operating system is safer, always up to date, and much lighter. Indeed Nokia 8 is very fluid, it already runs with Android Oreo and has the latest Android security patches on board. One could argue that, on the other hand, the device is not personalized at all. However, the user who chooses an Android Stock does so for the reasons listed above and is always free to choose - later - to customize their device according to their tastes.

Energy autonomy

The integrated battery from 3090 mAh it allowed me to cover the day of use, but in case of evening outings it is good to consider using a power bank! With the update to Android 8, I also noticed improvements in energy performance.

Battery charging can be done using technology Quick Charge 3.0 and it will take about an hour to go from 2-3% to 100%. The forms of energy saving are those offered by the stock version of the green robot OS.

Multimedia Subgroup

The master bedroom boasts two 13MP sensors, one to colors (equipped with optical stabilizer) and the other monochrome. For both, Nokia has decided to use ZEISS optics. The sensors work in different ways: together, to ensure sharper shots (a little less at night) or separately to obtain - for example - native black and white photos. Present the dual tone dual LED flash, laser focus and phase detection focus.

Overall the shots are satisfactory, but not what one would expect from a camera phone. In any case, the hardware conditions are all there so future software updates could do justice to the Nokia flagship.

The videos are shot with maximum resolution 4K, nothing to complain about the stabilization and rapid adaptation to changes in light. The zoom is not the best. The audio is excellent and is guaranteed by the 3 microphones of the system 3D Nokia OZO at 360 °, one of the killer features of Nokia 8. With this technology in the recording phase, the smartphone is able to pick up the direction of the audio and reduce background noise. Tested with my kitchen hood on behind me, I guarantee you it works!

The front chamber mounts a sensor from 13MP, also this equipped with ZEISS optics, with auto focus. Nokia (HMD Global) has also focused a lot on the front sensor to maximize functionality BOTHIE, which allows you to use both cameras at the same time. Basically, those who take a group photo - for example - will no longer have to give up being present! The same goes for videos, which however go up to a maximum full HD resolution. With a little imagination, you can do some very cool things with the bothie feature!

The audio coming out of the single audio speaker is very loud and quite crisp in most cases. The 3 ° Nokia OZO 360D technology guarantees audio quality even during playback and not just during recording.

Connectivity and sensors

Obviously present the 4G +, the reception of Nokia 8 is okay. I have not encountered any problems in any situation. Also present is Wifi, the Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and GPS (with A-GPS and Glonass).
The sensor compartment is also complete: compass, barometer, accelerometer, gyroscope, brightness / proximity and fingerprint reader.
