Nintendo Switch: how to connect wireless headphones?

Since update 13.0, released in September 2021, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch OLED are finally able to connect to wireless headphones using Bluetooth. Here's how to connect a Bluetooth headset to your Nintendo Switch right now.

Nintendo Switch and Bluetooth headset

La Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Lite and the new Nintendo Switch OLED are finally compatible with wireless headphones Bluetooth. Great news for all those who don't necessarily want to play with a dragging cable. This new feature is possible since Nintendo Switch update 13.0, unveiled in September 2021.

So how do you now connect wireless headphones to a Nintendo Switch? And what if you still want to connect a wireless headset on a version older than 13.0? We tell you everything here.

How do I connect wireless headphones to a Nintendo Switch?

To pair a Bluetooth headset with your Switch, the first thing to do is to make sure that the console is up to date since the pairing functionality is only available in version 13.0 of the system.

  • In the menu HOME, select Console settings.
  • Scroll through the different options and select Sideboard.
  • Select Console update to start the update.
  • During the operation, the console first checks if a new update is available.
  • If an update is available, the download will begin automatically.

Once done, your Nintendo Switch is ready to pair with Bluetooth headphones. Here's how to connect your headset to the console:

  • Go to Console settings.
  • Scroll down and go to the submenu Audio Bluetooth®.
  • Then put on your headphones or earphones in Bluetooth pairing mode (varies from headset to headset) then click Add device on your Nintendo Switch.
    • Your device should appear in this list. Click on its name and Confirm.

Once done, your Bluetooth headset will be saved to your Nintendo Switch. To connect if this is not done automatically when you switch on your headphones, go back to the menu Audio Bluetooth®, click on the name of your headset and click on Connect to this device.

That's it. As Nintendo points out, note that the use of a Bluetooth headset is limited. You will not be able to connect more than two wireless controllers when using Bluetooth audio, microphone use is not supported and the transmission of the audio signal may experience latency.

Use a wireless USB headset compatible with your Nintendo Switch (versions prior to 13.0)

If, for some reason or another, you do not want to update your console to version 13.0 and above, please note that your Nintendo Switch is compatible with some wireless USB headsets.

If Nintendo doesn't indicate which ones, we've put together an unofficial list for you. To use it, simply plug the USB adapter supplied with your headset, either into a USB port located at the back of the Dock of your Nintendo Switch, or on the USB-C port of the console itself, depending on. Here are all the compatible helmets.

  • Sony PlayStation Gold Sans fil (2018)
  • Sony PlayStation Platinum
  • SteelSeries Siberia 840
  • SteelSeries Arctis Pro
  • SteelSeries Wireless Arctis 1 (specifically designed for the Nintendo Switch)
  • Turtle Beach Elite 800
  • Turtle Beach Stealth 450, 600 et 700
  • Logitech G933
  • Logitech G533
  • Plantronics RIG 800HD
  • Plantronics RIG 800HS
  • Plantronics RIG 800LX

This list is obviously not limited. If your headset is not in this list and yet works with your Nintendo Switch, feel free to mention the reference of your helmet in the comments in order to help others.

Use a USB adapter compatible with your headset and Nintendo Switch (versions prior to 13.0)

What about wireless headphones ? The only possibility to connect this type of audio headset with your Nintendo Switch with a version older than 13.0 is to go through a dedicated adapter. You can get a good bluetooth transmitter on Amazon, or at Cdiscount, but also at other resellers.

Just search for "Nintendo Switch Bluetooth Adapter", for example, and pick the one that suits you the most. On the other hand, a few models seem to stand out in terms of quality. In particular, we recommend two models that are particularly popular with the community:

GENKI (Bluetooth audio adapter for Nintendo Switch) on Amazon

8BITDO (Bluetooth audio adapter for Nintendo Switch) on Cdiscount

These dongles can convert any audio jack en a bluetooth compatible system. Once you've got one, simply plug it into the 3,5 mini-jack on the top of Nintendo Switch, then pair it with your Bluetooth headphones.
