From August 20, the first three episodes of Nine Perfect Strangers, a new series created by David E. Kelley e John Henry Butterworth and starring stars of the caliber of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, Luke Evans, Bobby cannavale e Samara Weaving. This is the third collaboration between David E. Kelley and Nicole Kidman, after the successes of Big Little Lies and The Undoing. Also this time we are faced with a choral story, focused on the characters, their mysteries and their secrets, which converge in a reflection on universal themes such as mourning, self-confidence and the difficulties in managing one's frailties. Missing episodes of Nine Perfect Strangers will be released on a weekly basis until the completion of the 8-episode season.
Nine Perfect Strangers: Pain and Mystery at Tranquillum House
Each with a different story and with different problems to overcome, the protagonists find themselves in the Tranquillum House, a luxury resort where they will spend 10 days of tranquility and reflection. The hostess is Masha Dmitrichenko (Nicole Kidman), an enigmatic woman who manages to be both disturbing and reassuring as a guru. Together with his collaborators, Tranquillum House houses: the Marconi family, in mourning for the death of one of their children; spouses in crisis Jessica (Samara Weaving) and Ben (Melvin Gregg) Chandler; Lars Lee (Luke Evans), recently separated from his partner; Frances Welty (Melissa McCarthy), writer in private and employment crisis; Carmel Schneider (Regina Hall), a particularly anxious and short-tempered mother; Tony Hogburn (Bobby Cannavale), former professional sportsman struggling with drug problems.
In a living room where meditation or even boredom should win, souls soon heat up, exacerbating the various previous problems. To give a particular sense of disquiet to this experience is Masha, who as in a reality show observes the behavior of the guests of Tranquillum House, knows their secrets and requires private interviews with each of them, aimed at plumbing their frailties. The first episodes of Nine Perfect Strangers do not allow us to know for sure where the story will go, but the strength of the whole is guaranteed by the characters, all brilliantly interpreted.
To remain impressed above all is Michael Shannon, engaged in the role of a professor in the balance between remorse for his son who died prematurely, the cooled passion with his wife and a daughter in full growth. Samara Weaving's Jessica is instead the character that best reflects the spirit of our times: admired influencer on social media, a person deeply insecure in private life.
Many questions, but the answers?
The dynamics between the various characters are not always as effective. In particular, for the moment it is struggling to mesh the relationship between Melissa McCarthy and Bobby Cannavale, due to a lack of alchemy between the performers and uninspired dialogues. The atmospheres of Nine perfect strangers, however, manage to keep the series afloat even in the less incisive moments. The viewer is in fact continually pushed to ask himself questions about the protagonists' past, their real intentions and the true nature of the resort that hosts them. At the time of writing, we do not yet know if the many questions arising from the vision will have answers, and if the answers will be adequate to our expectations. The mystery that hovers over Tranquillum House, however, is enough to keep the attention alive, an aspect not taken for granted in a period in which many series are struggling not to unravel irremediably after a handful of episodes.
Between poignant group therapy sessions, fierce team games and alarming moments, accompanied by the ethereal figure of Masha, Nine Perfect Strangers has everything necessary to be the flagship series of this last part of summer, thanks also to the weekly publication, which will only increase the suspense and our thirst for answers. Appointment therefore on Prime Video for the continuation of this long session of collective rehabilitation, in which each character is a piece of an increasingly compelling puzzle.
