D-Link decided to bring to Italy mydlink Pro Wire‑Free Camera Kit, a bundle dedicated to home security and mainly composed of three elements: two compact cameras, cordless and battery powered, e a central hub that integrates a 200 dB siren. How do they work? I'll tell you about it in this review.

A child's play

The box of mydlink Pro Wire-Free Camera Kit contains everything you need: there are the cameras, two magnetic brackets, a screw bracket, the charger and the hub. Don't panic, you don't have to attach them to the wall if you don't want to: in reality you can simply place them on any surface, perhaps raised in order to better frame the room you are interested in. Nothing then forbids you to use one for the inside and one for the outside. Both cameras in fact boast the IP65 certification which guarantee resistance to the most common bad weather.

Now let's assume that you have decided where to place them. How are they installed? Do not worry, the configuration is simple and very fast. Just download l’app mydlink and then follow the directions provided. In about 5 minutes you will be ready to use your cameras effortlessly. In short, no complex and painful installations: the kit is designed to be assembled and managed by anyone.

To make it absolutely interesting mydlink Pro Wire-Free Camera Kit the design also takes care of it. In fact, video cameras are quite compact, elegant and suitable for any environment. Their being wireless then makes them extremely comfortable to place and above all to move. Do you want to change the angle or room? You can do all this in seconds and without changing any parameters. At your disposal then you have both a speaker and a microphone so you can interact with whoever is watching you from the app or, on the contrary, with whoever is at home when you are out of the house.

We can also do the same for recharging. When the battery runs out, just connect the cable included in the package, wait for the process to finish and then put the camera back in its place. Don't worry, this operation will only have to be performed occasionally. During my test, for example, I only ran one charge in 3 weeks.

Design and autonomy make this mydlink Pro Wire-Free Camera Kit a very interesting product. Too bad, however, for the feeling of dejà-vù that accompanied me for most of the time: don't these cameras really seem too similar to Netgear's Arlo?

A confusing application

The weak point of this kit is certainly represented by the application. The latter is very clear during the configuration, but then turns into a small and confusing nightmare. The reason? Too many tabs, too many functions and too little order.

Don't panic though. Checking what's going on at home won't be that hard. The first screen in fact allows you to see what happens in your home by switching from one video camera to another without major problems.

Now suppose you are at home and don't want to be picked up by anyone. How to do? First of all you have to click on the One Tap tab, then you will have to select Home, reach the settings and define the behavior of mydlink Pro Wire-Free Camera Kit. Privacy mode in order not to be "spied on", disable notifications related to motion detection and exclude the alarm. All this applies to all other profiles present, that is Out of office, Time to sleep, Wake up, Panic and My Tap. In short, each situation can be linked to different parameters according to your needs.

Then you also have the tab Settings where you find two rather useful functions: Planning, to decide when and how to turn the cameras on or off, and Automation, to tell your kit what to do if it detects motion. What does it mean? Simple: you can set the cameras to start recording when something is wrong and send you a push notification in the meantime. Or you can decide to trigger the alarm directly without wasting further time.

In short, you will have understood: on the mydlink Pro Wire-Free Camera Kit card it is not bad at all. Think that D-Link even gives you a gift one year of free cloud space for your filming! So what's the problem? Well, in my opinion the application, however rich, is not very intuitive and fragmented. It is not easy to find what you need and, once you have located the feature you need, the setting is not always intuitive.

Also I would have gladly sacrificed all the different profiles in exchange for geofencing. I find it absurd to have to remember to activate and deactivate the alarm every time I go out or come back home. Wouldn't it be more convenient to automate the process using geolocation?

Finally, the last point against it is integration with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. Not because they are not appreciated but because being able to find the right voice commands was a real challenge. A few more pointers would have been absolutely appreciated.

mydlink Pro Wire-Free Camera Kit has good potential, but also several limits. Installation is quick and easy, the image quality is truly excellent and the functions available are different. Too bad, however, for the obvious defects of this bundle. Leaving aside the lack of originality of the design, there are still a messy app, voice commands not very easy to use and the absence of geofencing. For 499 € perhaps something more could be done.
