The first change is obvious: the entire game has been built from the ground up in a modern engine, making the city of Lost Heaven seem more real than ever. # 1: the graphics engine
It's been 18 years, so there's really no way to improve the 2002 graphics for a modern game console or PC system. Instead, Hangar 13 rebuilt the game from the ground up. Everything is exactly as it was, until that strange Easter egg in the brothel mission.
Well, not everything (as we'll see below) - but it's ridiculously close. So close you might not even notice it. The general layout of the city is the same, as are the weapons, vehicles you find, and the mission structure. It's completely classic.
# 2: cover, melee combat, and stealth
Handling guns is very different this time around. It's more similar to than the original - you can take cover and come out to shoot enemies like. In Classic Mode, you can still be killed by a single villain with a Tommy pistol, and you will lose all bullets in your magazine when reloading, just like the original.
- Your weapons can be selected from a wheel, and you can hold one of each type - a handgun, long gun, melee weapon, or throwaway weapon.
Melee combat has also been improved. You can now perform counters when an enemy is about to attack. It's not the wild blaze of the original game. There are finishing moves when enemies are almost prone.
And there is a full-fledged stealth system. You can crouch down and perform stealth kills (or KOs) while behind an unconscious enemy. You can even move bodies around to avoid being spotted!
The enemy AI has been completely reworked, so that they take cover, throw molotov cocktails and detect corpses during patrols.
# 3: Health regeneration and classic difficulty
Regenerating health is a modern convenience, and you'll find this mechanic in all difficulty levels. . In classic mode, you will recover approximately ten% of your health gauge if you are in hiding.
It doesn't fully recover, and it does take a bit of time, but that 10% is pretty much needed if you're trying to play Classic. Due to many other changes in how the game works, the game is actually much more difficult on Classic difficulty.
The additional checkpoints are good though.
# 4: Missions have been changed for a bit more variety
The missions are the rhythms of the story are almost identical - most of the dialogue is exactly the same (but with a different cast, we'll get to that later) - and yet there are still changes to the overall structure of the game. mission. Some missions have been extended, while others are pretty versions that are exactly the same.
Here's a great example of spoiler-y. On a mission where you are ambushed by cops on a farm, you will have to fight waves of enemies instead of slowly fighting around the area.
