Huawei FreeBuds Lite review: simple and intuitive true wireless

Le Huawei FreeBuds Lite are the first true wireless headphones which I have used extensively and believe me, going back to the classic cable or Bluetooth headset with headband will be quite difficult. The FreeBuds Lite are in fact extremely simple to use and surprisingly long-lasting. Two features that made me really love them. We tell you everything in ours review.

Huawei FreeBuds Lite: a familiar look

The packaging of the Asian giant's true wireless earphones is rather minimal: we have headphones, a charging case, two additional pairs of rubber pads, a very short microUSB cable and manuals. Don't make the mistake of throwing the directions out of the window: you will need them to understand how to interact with the earphones.

Don't worry, nothing complicated. There are very few things you need to know before you start using FreeBuds Lite:

  • you just need 2 seconds of pressing on the small rear button of the pack to start pairing;
  • by pressing the same button for 10 seconds you can reset the earphones if something goes wrong;
  • the small LED on the front of the case is green when you still have battery and red when you need to recharge it.

At this point you know almost everything you need to start using these in-ear headphones, earphones made in polycarbonate and characterized by an external surface sensitive to your touch. Don't expect big features - these Huawei FreeBuds Lite let you do the bare minimum. Double tap on the right earphone will allow you to pause playback and resume it when necessary, but also of answer calls without having to take your smartphone out of your pocket; the same gesture on the left earphone will call back the virtual assistant on duty.

Two days in London with the Huawei FreeBuds Lite

I decided to put the Huawei FreeBuds Lite to the test by taking advantage of a short trip to the British capital. A two-day trip during which I took two planes, made several phone calls, took advantage of two very long taxi trips to watch some videos and of course listened to some music. On all these occasions I used the Asian giant's earphones without ever having to recharge the case.

I 55 mAh of the earphones, joined 410 mAh of the box that contains them, allows you to cover easily a dozen hours of use, but taking the necessary breaks since, away from their case, the headphones guarantee about 3 hours of autonomy.

However, my trip to London has not only tested the battery of these FreeBuds Lite, but alsoand comfort, in my opinion really extreme. In fact, once extracted from the case, the earphones connect independently to the smartphone, therefore without requiring any kind of intervention on your part. In addition, just remove one to automatically pause music or video, so you can interact with others in a simple and immediate way.

At this point you may be wondering why remove one of the headphones instead of using the double tap? There are two main reasons. The first - extremely banal - concerns speed: removing it from the ear tends to be faster and more intuitive. The second is related to the sound insulation that the FreeBuds Lite offer: there is no noise cancellation, but the in-ear nature of the product allows the mechanical attenuation of any external sound. To avoid having an unnecessarily high tone of voice or not hearing what they were saying to me, I have often preferred to remove one of the two earphones.

Finally, the comfort of these headphones is also linked to the charging case. Small, light and compact, the case is perfect for both your pockets and any bag or backpack you usually use. You won't even know you have it.

Audio and connectivity

Okay, that's all very nice, but what's the sound like? Don't expect a groundbreaking sound experience, but on balance the two drivers do a good job guaranteeing quite convincing highs and mids. Instead, there is a lack of bass, a flaw that will make audiophiles turn up their noses but, after all, it is not them that Huawei is addressing.

Also promoted are the 4 microphones, which guarantee good quality calls even in rather noisy environments - including roads and airports -, actually winking at those who want a pair of true wireless earphones suitable primarily for work.

Finally, the connectivity is good, which uses the older Bluetooth 4.2 but which proved to be decidedly solid. In fact, the signal is really stable, which avoids accidental disconnections both with the smartphone and between the two earphones.

A superfluous app

On the Google Play Store you can find the application dedicated to these Huawei FreeBuds Lite, but know that it is practically useless. In fact, the app includes only two keys: one for firmware update - not particularly painless unfortunately - and one that refers to instructions for the correct use of the product.

No possibility to customize listening or to change the functions related to the double tap: you will have to settle for what the default headphones offer.

Huawei FreeBuds Lite: buy them or not?

Earphones from the Asian company undoubtedly convinced me. With 129,90 € take you home a pair of solid, practical earphones with good autonomy and on the other almost glued to your ears. Even during a normal workout or a classic run they remained perfectly anchored to my ear.

They are obviously not perfect, and they lose a little bit when it comes to audio quality, but if you are looking for something comfortable and versatile they are certainly for you.
