Google Play Movies - also known by us as Google Play Movie - is about to disappear. No, don't give him smartphones but from smart TVs. By June 15, the application for Samsung, LG, Vizio TVs and for the Roku set-top box will disappear, replaced by a new section within the YouTube app.
Google Play Movies disappears from some smart TVs
Big G has given some useful pointers for the transition. First of all, rented and purchased movies and programs will still be available through the new section “Your movies & show” of the YouTube app.
Another feature also moves to Google's social network: Moviews Anywhere. It is not available with us but the service allows you to redeem codes included in DVD and Bly-ray to get their digital version, accessible anywhere and at any time. Again, users will be able to access and redeem content using YouTube.
Instead, there are features that will disappear entirely. First of all the Watchlist, i.e. the list with what you would like to see, and, secondly, sharing purchases with family members.
Users who go through this transition will receive a promo code from Google, applicable to their next purchase. Really a little consolation.
What happens after July 15th?
Let's start from a small assumption: Google does not have it personally with the owners of Samsung, LG and Vizio TVs. It is simply preparing for change. The Google Play Movies application, or Play Movies if you prefer, will become Google TV, even on Android smartphones.
This is to reduce the gap from the operating system that has been available on the latest generation Chromecasts for a few months and which should replace Android TV on new smart TVs.
What will happen to the content purchased on the Play Store after June 15? Of course you can recover them without difficulty by:
- l’app Google TV o YouTube su smartphone e tablet Android;
- the Google Play Movies or YouTube app on iPhone and iPad (currently there is no update for them);
- the YouTube app on Samsung, LG, Vizio smart TVs and on the Roku device;
- l’app Google TV su Chromecast;
- the YouTube website from the web:
- the old Google Play Movies app on TVs that won't update.
In short, nothing you have bought is destined for oblivion. You will simply have to get used to a new way of enjoying this content. But know that you still have time to adapt: Google TV for now is only landing in the United States and it will probably take a few more weeks before seeing the new app in Italy as well.
