Credits: Google

Google is adding features that help fight COVID-19. This makes it very easy to find a vaccination center in Google Maps. To do this, just look for the words COVID vaccine in the application.

Note also that the number of COVID-19 cases can now be displayed on the map. To activate the option, go to the upper right corner of your smartphone screen and simply touch the “COVID-19 info” option. In addition, be aware that Google is currently testing the display of the influx of people in the streets. For now, this feature is only available in New York and Sydney, but the American company intends to deploy it in other cities of the world soon, and in particular in your city.

Before heading to a bar, restaurant or your favorite video game store, do you often wonder if the place is packed with people? Google Maps can answer this question! • Go to Busy times
  • Choose a day of the week and a specific time

Currently available in the United States, these new options are expected to arrive in other parts of the world soon, including Your Country.

Navigate hands-free

When you're behind the wheel, it will be particularly interesting to be able to launch Google Maps without touching your phone so that you can then navigate hands-free. And it is quite possible, all you have to do is allow your smartphone to activate voice control from all screens. If it's a recent smartphone, there shouldn't be a problem. Here is how to do it:

Activate OK Google from the lock screen

  • Launch the app Google
  • Click on the button Plus at the bottom right
  • Select option Parameters and Voix
  • Check the boxes From any screen et Personalized results

Use the OK Google command to navigate in Google Maps

Once the “OK Google” function is activated, you will be able to launch Google Maps without touching your phone, even if it is locked. All you have to do is say the following voice command:

  • « OK Google, lance Google Maps »

The application then opens on your smartphone. Unfortunately, the voice control of the service still has its limits and once on Maps, you will have to press the microphone icon to be able to speak a place or an address by voice. Likewise, if you say the phrase "take me to such and such an address" from the OK Google voice command, you will still need to click the "Start" button from the search results to start browsing.

Know the low carbon zones and their particularities

Since 2021, certain of the country metropolises, including the Greater Your City, have become low carbon zones. Three were created in 2021 (your city, Lyon and Grenoble) and seven others (Aix-Marseille, Nice, Toulon, Toulouse, Montpellier, Strasbourg and Rouen) should join them before the end of 2021. This means that some vehicles cannot no longer circulate there on certain days or hours.

An update of Google Maps, pushed in July 2021, allows low carbon areas to be taken into account when calculating a route. When a route passes through one of these areas, the route preview alerts the user and displays the area. Its alerts are contextual. They take into account the nature of the zone (Crit'Air sticker numbers authorized, day and time of restricted traffic) and the model of the driver's vehicle (if the user has provided the information).

In the event of a restriction, if the route crosses the area, but does not end there, the application may suggest an alternative route. If the trip is entirely in the area or if its destination is located there, Google Maps is now able to offer an alternative to the car (public transport, VTC, urban mobility solution). In July 2021, only your city area was supported in Your country (and four others in Europe).

Save your favorite places

  • Touch the address
  • Click on the "Three dots" button at the top right to open the settings
  • Select "Add a label" and enter the name of your choice

Remember where you parked your car

To do this, you just need to do a long press on the area for which you want to add a marker. You can then add a label as explained in the paragraph.

How to add stopovers to your route on Google Maps

You can add stages to your route on Google Maps, very practical when going on vacation. So when you leave you can define stops in places you want to visit for example. The advantage is that suddenly Maps will estimate the time of arrival at the end point by counting the detours. Now let's see how to do it

  • Open Maps and set your initial route
  • Press the 3 small dots at the top right and do Add a step
  • Add your step, you can add as many as you want

Navigate in augmented reality with Google Maps

Google Maps has an augmented reality navigation mode. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the application adds elements intended to guide you on the view from the main photo sensor. For this, it will suffice to be in possession of an ARCore and ARKit compatible smartphone. Many models that are at least Android 7.0 Nougat support these technologies, but others require the presence of Android 8.0 Oreo. Please note, the mode is still being deployed. We explain how to launch the mode:

  • Launch a route on Google Maps
  • Select Display the route
