▷From platform to shooter, the video game with the Tamarins that doesn't convince 🥇

Our review of Tamarin, the baby girl's first video game Chameleon Games who has seen fit to debut in the world of video games with a potentially captivating, colorful and full of adventure title. The finished product, however, does not quite live up to the expectations and will of its creators to dust off the video games of the past in a modern way.

Tamarin's review

Tamarin is set in a world populated only by animals. Our protagonist is an anonymous orange monkey belonging to the race (in fact) of the gods tamarini. The sweetest primates live in harmony with nature until they are attacked by a army of insects promoters of an industrialized society. In fact, the enemies of the tamarins live in a gray and polluted world where the brutal force of weapons reigns supreme.

Intended to conquer peaceful society and in symbiosis with the nature of the tamarins, the insects start a ferocious attack. In the fight, the house of our adorable protagonist is destroyed and intent on saving his family and the other inhabitants of his land, he will start fighting against the army of insects to restore peace.

Here the funny and nice Platform video game is transformed in a very short time into a bizarre hybrid between an adventure video game and a shooter. After the first few sequences, our adorable little monkey picks up an Uzi with which to eliminate the ants, hornets and other insects that stand in front of him. A pretty solid control system it's a third-person camera characterize the shooter part of the game that will dominate the game. However, this is accompanied by some sequence Platform in which you will have to jump, climb and climb on the various levels of the game to reach new areas or collect gods collectable.

Among these we find some little blue birds to save that will allow us to discover new game areas. For every three birds brought back to their respective nest, we will get a special insect that will be used to open doors. Each of them will require a specific number of insects to be opened.

The game world is spread over one well-characterized and well-limited series of levels / areas. The scope for exploration is not that wide and is limited to looking for items, ammo, and other creatures to rescue. Scattered around the areas, we find enemies and a series of bosses in certain areas. To defeat them, we will have at our disposal an arsenal of weapons that will become increasingly varied. Unfortunately, the artificial intelligence of the enemies is really low and it will be enough to keep pressing the attack button without even dodging too much incoming shots.

A not so explosive mix

From platform to shooter, the video game with the Tamarins that doesn't convince The two souls of the game do not turn out to be a successful mix. The joyful and adventurous atmosphere of the first seconds of the game collides incredibly with that made of weapons and machine guns. The desire to create such a strong contrast did not give the desired results and that potential nonsense that made some titles of the past great becomes a inconvenient to say the least.

To remove even more character from a title that could have stood out, they think about it the characters, including the protagonist, and the totally anonymous enemies. THE few cinematic within the game they turn out to be somewhat questionable and keep the story going without the slightest emotion.

Lights and colors

From a technical point of view, Tamarin is better than… in everything else. A good quality of textures and lighting effects manages to give soul and color to the game world which, unfortunately, is not properly exploited. The good fluidity of animations of the protagonist, however, do not reflect those of the rest of the characters and enemies who they are very reminiscent of the movements of an old video game from the early 2000s. The controls, which currently do not support 100% mouse and keyboard, turned out to be more appropriate than expected, however, to the detriment of a camera not always at its best.

Tamarin Review: In conclusion…

Tamarin was nowhere near our expectations. The misleading trailers of the game have never, or almost never, shown the shooter sequences which, as anticipated, make up 90% of the game which underlines the lack of confidence of the development team in this particular mechanic. The points of merit are unfortunately overshadowed by the serious shortcomings of a game that could have been developed much, much better.
