Fallout 76 offers an online multiplayer compartment that immerses players in the atmosphere of the Fallout series. Everything from perks to building their own settlements has been overhauled and reorganized to fit the new style of play. Even the factions have received some corrections. In this guide to Fallout 76, we've gathered everything we know about the five factions in the game. We'll take a look at descriptions of each one.
If you want to try Fallout 76 before the official release, you'll have to enter the game's Beta. If you want to know what we think of the Bethesda game betas, read our proof.

Fallout 76 | All Factions
Bethesda has revealed that Fallout 76 will feature Factions. The problem is that Bethesda has been pretty secretive about the main story of Fallout 76, and how players will interact with Factions and NPCs (if any). Regardless, we have a lot of information about each of the five Factions you'll encounter while playing Fallout 76.
Fallout 76 | Brotherhood of Steel
After some small fan protests about some inconsistencies, Bethesda finally explained how the Brotherhood of Steel is present in the game. The story of the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 76 is described as follows:
In November 2077, a month after the Great War, Army Captain Roger Maxson arrived with survivors at the Californian bunker in Lost Hills. There he formed the Brotherhood of Steel, which used a working satellite to extend its reach across America... to the Appalachians.
It is clear that this is a different kind of Brotherhood than what we are used to, as demonstrated by the different armor and military organization insignia in the history of Fallout 76
Fallout 76 | Bandits
You can't venture into the world of Fallout without meeting bandits, so it's no surprise that they're also in this new incarnation of the series. Here's what we know about the Bandits of Fallout 76:
Ruthless. Selfish. Bloodthirsty. Since the day the bombs fell, the Bandits have been the scourge of the wasteland. Rose is their enigmatic leader. But who are you? And what does she hope to accomplish while she watches the carnage of her followers from the top of the world?
So, once again, you're going to blow up Bandits' limbs in Fallout 76. There were options to join them in Fallout 4, so hopefully the same will be possible in Fallout 76. The Bandits have a headquarters on top of the world.
Fallout 76 | Rescuers
The Rescuers are a new addition to the Fallout universe, having trained in Appalachia at an unspecified time after the Great War. You've heard of them since 2102, so that would explain why they're not in any of the other games. This is how Bethesda describes the Rescuers in Fallout 76.
Across America, they were the first to offer help: brave firefighters, police officers, and medical professionals who selflessly served their communities. After the bombs fell, they trained rescue workers. Their mission - to help each other... regardless of price.
Rescuers seem to have a very nice style to interface with, in fact, they wield axes and wear fireman's uniforms. They are certainly nicer than the Bandits, so it might be worth joining them. They can be found operational outside Morgantown Municipal Airport.
Fallout 76 | Free States
Another new faction to deal with is the Free States. They are essentially Doomsday preppers who survived the Great War because of, or thanks to, their paranoia and self-sufficiency. It is not clear where you will be able to find the free states, but they are said to operate outside the bunkers. Here's everything we know about the free states of Fallout 76.
On October 23, 2077, the world was rocked by nuclear war. But there was someone who expected the worst and predicted everything. In Appalachia, a group of Doomsday preachers did exactly that. Organized as free states, they holed themselves up in their bunkers.
Since the free states are made up of a group of Doomsday preachers, they will probably have plenty of supplies. So if you like canned goods, you know who to join.
Fallout 76 | Enclave
The Enclave is one of the historical factions in Fallout 76. They are present in Fallout 2 and 3, essentially ensuring that elements of the pre-war governmental political structure remained intact after the nuclear attack. They are deeply involved with Vault-Tec and planned to evacuate to another planet to avoid the bombs. That's how they fit into Fallout 76:
Just before the bombs fell, the U.S. leadership moved to a remote oil rig off the coast of San Francisco. The Enclave's mission: to restore government control of America from key locations, like a secret bunker hidden somewhere in the Appalachians.
The Enclave is likely to play an important role in the overall history of the game. As for where to find them, we'll have to hunt for that "secret bunker".
