You have certainly heard of Crucial: an affiliated brand Micron Technologies which has been producing products with an absolutely competitive quality / price ratio for several years.
Today we had the pleasure of testing and reviewing theCrucial P5 SSD, presented during the year 2020.
Let's find out the details together without getting lost in further chat!
Crucial P5 2 TB • Technical specifications
In the current state of affairs the Crucial P5 represents the highest range proposal in the line-up of Crucial by Micron.
IL Crucial P5 covering memorie 96L TLC NAND flash and a controller Nvme new six-core, owner of Micron.
From the hardware point of view, this device is therefore very well structured.
We remember how the P5 be a SSD M.2 2280 Nvme of type single sided which does not support the benefits given by PCI Express 4.0. In fact, it is still stationary, like the majority of devices on its same price range, a PCI Express 3.0.
This, like many other SSDs, comes with one cache to increase performance. In this case it is one SLC type cache even if the implementation is quite different than the competition.
The drive then implements the thermal protection functions that come into play around 70 degrees and theAPT for better energy efficiency.
Sul the Of these Crucial P5 memories are installed L da 1 GB a 2133 Mhz used for the mapping buffer FTL.
Le SSD memories they are then insured by 5 year official Crucial warranty.
Crucial claims that this device is capable of achieving an operating speed of 3,400MB / s in sequential reading and a sequential writing which is close to 3,000 MB / s.
THESSD is available only in the following memory sizes: 250 GB, 500 GB, 1000 GB, 2000 GB.
Only the first of the three, the thinnest in terms of memory size, has different stated speed specifications.
As far as performance is concerned, we will have the opportunity to learn more in the following paragraphs.
Crucial P5 2 TB Benchmark • Test & Benchmark
Let's move on to the most important section, namely the one relating to performance and tests.
To judge the behavior of the Crucial P5 we will use three test applications: the famous Crystal Disk Benchmark, Atto Disk Benchmark e Anvil’s storage Utilities.
As we will see the results will tell us about a Crucial P5 that meets the stated specifications but that compared to the competition, such as the Samsung EVO Plus or a WD Black it does not present a best buy performance.
Crucial P5 2 TB Benchmark • CrystalDiskMark
The first benchmarking we face is CrystalDiskMark, perhaps the best known of all storage device testing applications.
In this way we have a way to verify what the peak speed of ours is SSD Nvme and compare it with that declared by the company.
On closer inspection the Crucial P5 meets the specifications indicated by Micron regarding the reading speed, while in writing we are a bit distant from the 3000 MB / s indicated on the site.
However, remember that these data refer only to the read and write segments respectively on files of 1 MB or 4 KB in the case of random and non-sequential accesses and with queues of variable size between 1, 8 and 32.
If we increase the number of queues, the speed gradually increases reaching that indicated by the manufacturer. In fact, remember that the longer the duration of a transfer on writing, the more the speed progressively rises up to the limit point of its curve.
To have a more detailed and broader view we will have the opportunity to see the benchmarks carried out on ATTO that use files of multiple sizes.
We can then compare the results both in reading and writing with other models of SSD Nvme present in the market through the graphs below.
As we can see despite the Crucial P5 does not have exciting performances when the queue of files is stopped at 1, when the number of queues increases, the device fully complies with the specifications reported by Micron.
It does not have particularly solid performances, but sometimes a little discordant.
As we will also see from the tests on ATTO compared to some competitor models (not shown here since not directly tested by the staff) it loses some points on performance.
Crucial P5 2 TB Benchmark • ATTO Disk Benchmark
I benchmarks performed on ATTO give a broader perspective on the performance of this device, especially as it is performed on size files very variable.
Below you can find the result of the Crucial P5 benchmark on ATTO and then graphs to compare the device with others of its kind.
As we can see, the results of this test are not particularly brilliant. They are very wobbly on larger files.
This is due to the total file size of the transfer which is 256 MB in the test. Increasing its value to 1 GB the speed increases and stabilizes.
But since a similar type of test was previously done with Crystal disk it would make no sense to repeat it here too.
With this test on ATTO benchmark instead let's try to understand the behavior ofSSD M.2 Nvme Crucial P5 about not too large file transfers.
The results respect the technical specifications declared by the company, especially by increasing the size of the file to be transferred.
If we then compare ours Crucial P5 however, we see how the specific weight compared to the Crucial P2 is not particularly evident.
And even compared to Kingston's KC2500 the performances are less solid and constant.
This is a consideration that we will resent, as well as the only negative note of the product, which although it respects the technical specifications, when compared with other models on the market, including some not shown in the graph, presents some performance by price slightly lower.
The previous scenario is repeated again with regard to writing.
The Crucial P5 is a good M.2 Nvme SSD but it does not perform solid enough to beat the competition.
Crucial P5 2 TB Benchmark • Anvil’s storage Utilities
Anvil’s storage Utilities is a program that does a benchmark of our SSD also assigning him one score as well as showing the data related to speed and latency.
Su Anvil’s storage utilities our Crucial P5 reaches 14.859.70 score points.
Let's compare them now with some other devices to get an idea.
As we can see, also in this case the P5 does not outperform the Crucial P2, but from the point of view of score the two are also quite close, despite the difference in price being substantial between the two models.
It is useless to draw any comparison with theAorus which is much more expensive and is a Nmve 4.0.
Oddly, the Kingston KC2500 scores lower than P5. Although in all previous tests it has shown to have a more solid performance.
Also in this case we do not have other competing SSDs such as Samsung's EVO Plus or the WD Black in the graphs, since they have not been tested in first person, but we know how these two models have the cards on the table to complicate life at the Crucial P5.
Crucial P5 2 TB • Conclusions
As previously explained the Crucial P5 it is an excellent product, which fully complies with the specifications indicated by the manufacturer.
The performances are honest and the price is absolutely regular and in line with many of the competitors' proposals.
The only problem with this Crucial P5 it is competition.
We can find several valid alternatives including i Samsung Evo Plus o i WD Black, which offer a little more in terms of performance at a very similar price.
A very positive note of the P5 is definitely the 5 year warranty, which, however, I doubt will be exercised by anyone, since i solid state drives they are designed to be long-lasting and reliable.
