The moment comes for everyone, or almost.
For some it comes quickly, others prefer to wait. And in the end, the first time is never forgotten.
I'm talking about the license, obviously! What did you understand?
At the age of 18, the Italian State authorizes young people wishing to move and be independent to take the driving license exam, after which they can start driving on the streets all over the world.
At that point, however, a fundamental component is missing: the car.
What then are the best cars for novice drivers?
A recurring question that I have often been asked, and that today I want to try to answer.
In Italy, as you know, there are restrictions for new drivers, about what you can drive, how fast and other rules for the first few years of driving.
Not all cars are therefore suitable for your first year, at least from a legal point of view.
Among those "eligible", then, there are some more valid, others more "selected", others even less popular, finally some ... to avoid.
Today I will propose 8 cars, 5 used and 3 new, which will accompany your first year on the roads with reliability, safety, content and, why not, fun.
I will also tell you which cars not to choose so as not to find nasty surprises and allow you to choose the best that the used and new car market has to offer.
Let's see what you can place your… dreams on!

What are the car restrictions for novice drivers?
The rules that a novice driver must follow are few, simple and clear, determined by117 article of the Highway Code. In detail:
- Until the completion of the FIRST YEAR of driving license, the novice driver will have to drive cars subject to a limitationThese are:
-The engine must have a maximum power of 70 kW, or 95 hp.
-The power / weight ratio of the car cannot exceed 55 kW / ton, that is 75 HP for every 1000 kg of car weight. - Until the completion of the THIRD YEAR of driving license, the novice driver will have lower limits on the motorway and on the main suburban roads.
In particular, on motorways the novice driver cannot exceed 100 km / h, while on the main suburban (state roads with more than one lane and median and with a limit, usually, of 110 km / h) the "maximum" speed is limited to 90 km/h. - Furthermore, for the first 3 years from obtaining the license, the novice driver cannot have a BAC higher than 0 g / liter.
So, in summary, for one year our young licensed driver cannot drive cars with power exceeding 95 HP, and which have a power / weight ratio of 75 HP / ton.
To give you a trivial example with a very common car, a novice driver can drive a 1.2 HP Lancia Ypsilon 60 because it falls within the limits, while he cannot drive the almost identical 80 HP version.
This in fact, although it has less than 95 HP, exceeds the limit of power / weight ratio with its "well" 85 HP / ton.
How do I know if the car I am interested in is suitable for a novice driver?
On major used car search sites, such as AutoScout24, only cars suitable for novice drivers can be included.
In addition, the power / weight ratio has been included in the car's booklet for several years.
If, on the other hand, you do not have any of these possibilities, just make a simple division: read the power expressed in kW from the booklet and divide it by the weight expressed in kg and then multiply by 1000. At that point, you will have your power / weight ratio expressed in kW per ton, just as stated in Article 117.
But remember to add 75 kg to the weight of the car. The mass of cars is usually expressed "unladen", with no one on board, while the average weight of the driver must also be added to the power / weight ratio to obtain the so-called "curb weight".
The criteria of choice: both new and used, but always modern and safe
Despite the limitations of power and power / weight ratio eliminate many cars on the road, there are really a lot of cars for novice drivers around.
So how to choose a suitable car for novice drivers? What are the criteria to be preferred?
The three keywords for all cars, both new and used, on the list were: modern, safe and ... "free".
What does it mean?
Being mostly intended for a young audience, I aimed at cars that are as modern and safe as possible when it comes to used cars. For the new ones, on the other hand, I preferred cars with high-quality safety equipment and a well-finished multimedia part.
All this, without forgetting the problems of big cities, where old cars and cars with not very recent Euro regulations are frowned upon, or even stopped. No Euro 4 diesel or old "classics": here you go around without polluting too much (and offending anyone).
I then tried to propose cars that can be excellent travel companions for the following years, or that alternatively are easy to resell if you wanted to “make the leap” at the end of the year of limitations.
Used cars for novice drivers: post 2010, from 5 euros, under 5 thousand euros
Let's move on to the facts, talking immediately about the our choices on the second-hand market.
As mentioned, the criteria for our choice were simple: less than 10 years, under 5 thousand euros, at least 5 euros.
In this way, we have found several cars suitable to play the role of the first car.
Some are even capable of doing something more.
FIAT Panda and 500, the “sisters” to beat
It can't be a real car list for novice drivers without the two bestsellers in this category, Second generation FIAT Panda and FIAT 500.
No, I'm not crazy: I put them together because, despite being very different, they are the same thing underneath.
For those who do not know, in fact, FIAT 500 is based on the platform of the Panda, and for this reason they share most of the engines, mechanical parts and many of their characteristics.
They even shared the same factory: this generation of Pandas was in fact built in the Polish FIAT factory in Tychy, where the 500 is still assembled today.
Obviously they turn to two totally opposite types of customers.
On the one hand we have Panda: square, very square, capable of condensing 3 (or 50) seats into just over 4 meters and 5, space for luggage and a lot of practicality.
The interiors are pragmatic, rigorous, and focus on the point. The visibility is excellent, it is very easy to drive and even the butcher under the house repairs it.
Of course, it's not exciting to drive, it's not very spacious, it's not refined and it's not comfortable on the highway, but the Panda is always the Panda. After 2010 then radio, climate, electric front windows and 4 airbags are standard.
On the other hand we have 500.
Aesthetically, it looks like a completely different car: sweeter, more refined, cooler both inside and out.
The very high driving position, the raised gear lever and many small details, such as the position of the electric windows, however, recall the Panda, and the quality is not at the level of some rivals.
500 however makes up for it all with a unique aesthetic, a totally different taste and appeal and with one driving much more fun and relaxed.
It also turns out to be decidedly quieter than the Pandino, thanks to much more accurate aerodynamics.
The space, however, is really tight: little for luggage, almost nil for rear passengers.
Consider it a 2 + 2, or two adults in front and two children behind, or two people who are very fond of you.
Too bad for the tilting driver's seat, which does not allow people taller than one meter and 75 to be comfortable.
Which engine to choose? Well, the choice is obligatory: the legendary 1.2 HP 69 Fire.
It is not the fastest engine in the world, nor the most refined.
The small 1.2, however, is fluid, regular, easy for the first "outings" where you are still familiar with the gearbox and the clutch, and withstands both LPG and CNG well, especially with the standard systems.
And if you love adventure, Panda 4 × 4 is the only modern off-road vehicle that can be driven by new drivers, and it is truly amazing what Pandino can do up the mountains.
The right price? Around 3.500-4-000 for the Panda, a thousand higher for the Cinquino: chic aesthetics pay off!
Neither has major reliability flaws. Their biggest enemy is careless owners - if treated well, they are truly bomb proof. If they are treated badly because "so much is a FIAT" be prepared to have problems.
So it becomes essential to choose a Panda or a 500 with certified and regular maintenance: here it really matters.
FIAT Qubo, the ugly but good (and spacious)
The next car is definitely out of the ordinary, despite coming from the favorite brand in Italy for the "first experience", FIAT.
We speak in fact of FIAT Qubo.
I already know exactly what you are thinking.
“But it's a van! Which eighteen year old would like to go around on that thing? "
Of course, it is undoubtedly derived from a commercial vehicle. And of course, her lines will never win a beauty contest. In my opinion, however, it is the perfect car for those with many friends, or many hobbies.
Being derived from a commercial vehicle, in fact, it has tons of space for the driver, his passengers and a lot of luggage. All in a length of less than 4 meters, shorter than a Punto Evo!
If you fold down the seats, then they are there 2500 liters of space, usable to carry things, to rest or to… make friends, let's say.
There really is room for everything and everyone, and thanks to the sliding doors you will not be afraid that some distracted friend will slam against things or cars.
Thanks to its skimpy length Qubo it is very easy to park thanks to large glass surfaces and vertical bodywork on each side.
This form a… qubo also allows another advantage.
All the headlights are positioned high up, so as not to break in case of contact with walls or other cars. Perfect for learning, right?
Its spaciousness also makes it perfect for taking friends around, going on vacation without giving up, or pursuing your hobbies without having to ask mum or dad for a ride with the big car.
If you play some sport, for example, you can load everything on your Qubo, and even change into it if necessary.
Qubo is also the perfect car for picnics: thanks to the large boot lid you will always have shade and shelter from the rain. I told you it's perfect!
Its being so weird and spacious also makes it fun to have and take advantage of. It is certainly different from any other car, and discovering its compartments, compartments and vanettes, hiding things in it, or enjoying holidays with friends is truly priceless.
Apart from everything, do not make the mistake of underestimating FIAT Qubo and brand it as “a courier van”.
It drives easily and surprisingly pleasant, being based on the Punto platform.
It is not only spacious, but it is also comfortable and quiet, more than other "normal" rivals, and has proved to be very reliable over the years. Even more than for the Panda and 500, the only problems encountered were those “caused” by careless owners. Being derived from a work vehicle, Qubo always goes anyway.
As for the engines, then, I recommend two ways. On the one hand, if you travel many kilometers and with many friends, the 1.3 Multijet turbodiesel da 75 o 95 CV. Above all, the latter allows you low consumption, a good dose of performance and a lot of "back" for when you bring lots of things or lots of friends.
If, on the other hand, you are not in a hurry and want to save money, the advice is to focus on natural gas 1.4 Natural Power.
Of course, it takes almost 18 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km / h, but the cost per kilometer will be really negligible and the autonomy exceeds 1000 km in total.
If I haven't convinced you yet, I'll tell you about prices. You can find Qubos starting at around 2500 euros. At that figure, however, they are full of miles: those who have bought a vehicle of this type have often exploited it a lot.
However, there are several specimens, perhaps belonging to elderly people, with 100 or 150 thousand km starting from around 4000 or 5000 euros. At this figure, you won't find anything so spacious and fun. Word!
Hyundai i20, reliability and robustness
The third car on the list is another distinguished spokesperson for the “ugly but good” category Hyundai i20.
Unlike FIAT Qubo, however, its ace in the hole is not space, but ratherreliability.
Hyundai's path in Italy is in fact marked by a fundamental pillar: since its debut in the early 90s to today, the cars of the Korean brand have always had to be as reliable as possible.
And i20 for its part really does its dirty job.
Our focus today is on the i20 which fits perfectly into our budget, which is the first series produced between 2008 and 2015.
This series was not the best in terms of looks and aesthetics, and the interiors were coated in economy, with rigid plastics and not very beautiful to the touch.
Its strong point, however, was the build quality. From the paint to the interior panels, from the seats to the mechanics.
Everything is solid, well assembled, well done.
In this "phase" of the life of the Hyundai-Kia Group, very little attention was paid to aesthetics and a lot to the point, and in fact, despite not being glamorous or sophisticated, the i20 offered as standard everything that was needed.
Radio MP3, AUX and with USB connection, air conditioning, electric windows, and six Airbags.
Precisely in the field of security i20 is a champion: in 2009 it was the fourth safest car ever, with 5 EuroNCAP stars.
On the road it is safe, easy and with ESP and traction control as standard it does not put you in difficulty even in the most arduous conditions. It also gives you a fair amount of silence compared to its rivals, and is really very spacious: excellent for holidays.
The engines are all very reliable. My advice leads to focus on the best 1.2 da 78 CV: It's not the liveliest engine on Earth, but it's bombproof.
It tolerates LPG very well, which is standard on the versions BlueDrive: a boon if you want to save.
For the rest, check that it has been well maintained by the previous owner, with regular maintenance. Once you've checked that, you're good to go - its reliability won't let you down.
And if you want to "play sports" there was also there 3-door version a little more dynamic, a rarity in the segment.
Finally, for those who travel a long way, the best choice is undoubtedly the 1.4 CRDi turbodiesel from 90 CV, one of the most sparing and reliable small diesels around.
The small i20 may not be the most popular, but it is one of the most concrete small around, ea less than 4.000 euros one of the cars with the best value for money.
Toyota Aygo, the small pocket
After talking about two not very popular cars, let's talk about one of the most chosen, but also the most valid cars for novice drivers.
I'm talking about Toyota Aygo, more precisely of the first generation produced between 2005 and 2014.
Produced in collaboration with the Peugeot-Citroen Group, it finds twin sisters in Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1, identical in all subsequent considerations.
Toyota Aygo is the classic small city car.
With its 3 meters and 40, in fact, is shorter than a Panda by over 15 cm: in fact, as expected, the passenger compartment is really narrow for 4 people and the space in the boot is really reduced to the bone.
However, these small dimensions make it perfect as a car for novice drivers.
Aygo is so small that you can park anywhere, it is so narrow that it will not give you headaches even in the narrow streets of the historic centers and thanks to its very low weight the 68 HP of the 1.0 three-cylinder engine is never too low, quite the contrary.
Aygo indeed has a surprisingly stiff and fun chassis, fairly stiff suspension and fairly precise steering.
This makes her a car really fun to drive, and without ever exceeding the speed limits!
The 1.0 is also very reliable (although it can begin to use a little too much oil after 150 km) and consumes very little.
The goodness of the Aygo as a fun and reliable car is demonstrated by the presence of the "Citroen C1 Cup".
It is a series of track races held in several European countries (including Belgium and the United Kingdom), a real single-make where you race using the twin of Aygo, Citroen C1, for endurance races of 6, 12 or even 24 hours! It wasn't nice to drive… they wouldn't use it, would they?
Prices start at just over 2500 euros for 2010 Aygo, but I recommend you focus on cars produced from 2011 onwards.
The reason? In that year the restrictions for novice drivers came into effect, and so they are About ten kg have been added to the technical sheet to bring the Aygo within the limitations on the power / weight ratio.
On those manuals produced before 2011 there is the possibility that they are not legally suitable for driving for novice drivers. You knew it.
MINI Ray, for those who love to drive (and the cool look)
The latest used of our TOP 5 is one of the most desired cars for novice drivers, MINI.
There would be the One D versions of the first modern MINI, the R50, but due to the Euro 1.4 approved 3 diesel I do not recommend it as it is now excluded from many Italian cities.
Let's focus on the second series of the modern MINI, the R56.
MINI has always had a higher target in terms of power and performance, so many of the little Brits you see on the streets are too powerful.
The British manufacturer, however, already in 2009 had "smelled" the birth of power limitations for novice drivers and for this created MINI Ray.
What is the Ray version? A version that takes care of the point, in every sense.
The rims are in sheet metal with wheel covers, the interiors have fabric seats, the two-spoke steering wheel without controls and the engine is the least powerful of the range, a 1.4 petrol to 75 CV.
The Ray version therefore loses those chic solutions of the most equipped MINIs, but as standard it offers everything you need.
Electric windows and mirrors, radio with AUX socket (perfect for Bluetooth repeaters, or for Alexa Echo Auto), manual climate control and the quality of the BMW Group in assemblies and finishes. Not bad!
The one thing he doesn't give up most of all is his being MINI.
The mirror caps are colored in bright and interchangeable shades. The gearbox is identical to that of the more powerful sisters, and has six gears: perfect for long journeys.
The engine is not at all powerful, but it is elastic, it goes up well in revs and supports one of the best chassis among small cars.
The rigid suspension, the very precise steering and the real MINI handling will make you have fun on all kinds of roads, better if it also has curves.
Of course, it is very small, it only has four seats and the trunk is skimpy.
The trips, however, thanks to the above-average soundproofing are comfortable and relaxed, and if you want to save as much as possible, bet on the RayG version.
This adds to all this a standard LPG system, for maximum savings.
Prices? We are at the limit of our budget: 5.000 euros enough to find the first versions of 2009-2010.
It costs more than the average, but if you love to drive and want to start doing it properly, this is the right choice.

New driver cars to AVOID: FIAT 600, the "death trap"
I have recommended 5 cars for novice drivers that deserve your attention.
Obviously there are not only these 5 in the world, and basically all the other possibilities are equally valid. However, there are some exceptions: car from which, if possible, stay away. This takes into account two particular points: safety and reliability.
Let's start from the first point, the safety.
Many for the first car try to save as much as possible. Absolutely shared and shareable attitude, but there is a level not to pass, even if you have a budget of less than 1.000 euros.
What? FIAT Seicento.
Because? The reason is simple: it is a very unsafe car.
Here's a little history pill to set the record straight. FIAT Seicento was born in 1998 as the heir of the squared-off Cinquecento, which debuted in 1991 but whose project dates back to the second half of the 80s.
From the Cinquecento, the Seicento (or 600, as it has been called since 2005) adds only a few slight improvements in terms of chassis rigidity, a passenger airbag and ABS (optional).
For the rest, the safety offered by the seventeenth century is that of a car from the 80s. If you buy one, even one of the last, then, you will have a car that meets safety standards over 30 years ago. Thirty.
And I'm not saying that, but the institute EuroNCAP that in 2000, when car safety tests were several times lower than today, gave it only 1 stars out of 5.
For comparison, a direct rival like Ford Ka, already not at the top for safety, had taken 4 stars.
In my region, Piedmont, where these cars are still widespread, fatal accidents involve the Seicento cars by too high a percentage, especially in the countryside where average speeds are higher ...
Leaving aside the forgettable guide, the very poor performance, the poor quality of the interior and the Lilliputian space, such poor security is really too big a flaw to ignore. And if you are looking for a version less than 15 years old, they also cost relatively expensive, over 2.000 euros.
If you really want to save and spend less than 1000 euros, it is much wiser to focus on the "sister" Punto from the early 2000s, or on the contemporary Golf, Polo or Clio series ... There are much safer cars from the seventeenth century under 1000 euros.
Don't believe me? I leave you the original video of the 2000 Crash Test.
Look carefully at the impact of a Seicento at 64 per hour against a frontal obstacle and the identical one of a Ford KA of the same year. Draw your own conclusions ...
Cars for novice drivers to avoid: Mercedes A and B Class, victims of their complexity
Two would also fit into our budget Mercedes-Benz, the second series A-Class and the first B-Class series.
Why weren't they included?
The reason is very simple: they lack in reliability and management costs.
Let's take a step back.
In 1997, Mercedes decided to enter the compact car market and launched the A-Class.
Its ultra-high minivan line was breaking, but there was a reason for such a distinctive line.
The platform on which it is built is in fact called "sandwich floor".
In short, between the floor and the floor of the passenger compartment there is an empty space, a "corridor" designed to accommodate all the mechanics of the car in the event of a frontal accident.
All the mechanics then, in order to "slide" into its safety compartment, are mounted very inclined forward by over 50 °.
This made the A-Class one of the safest cars in the event of an impact, and this mechanical solution was also passed to the second series of 2004 and the first series of Class B. For the third generation of the A-Class and the second of the B-Class though this technology has been abandoned, and for a very simple reason.
In fact, this highly refined solution has a huge flaw. The motor, in order to slide into its housing, is mounted on a particular frame that makes even the smallest maintenance jobs almost impossible.
To change even just a piece that is out of the normal routine of a coupon it is necessary to remove the entire front axle and work on the engine "disconnected" from the car.
This involves gods costs of really high maintenance, which owners often avoid addressing.
The end result is a very high amount of Class A and B with oil leaks, ignition problems and damaged seals, all problems never resolved.
This situation is not easily solved, as it is understandable how many owners avoid spending over 500 euros for the replacement of a small 30 euro gasket ...
And it is a real shame, because Class A and B offer comfort, excellent finishes and a beautiful drive, as well as a brand with great appeal, but unfortunately they are slaves to their own refinement.
New cars for novice drivers: easy, cheap and long-lasting
So far we have talked about used cars for novice drivers.
Used cars are always the most popular choice if you don't already have a suitable car at home.
Cheaper, less worries about using them and, in case, "baptizing" them during a parking lot, used cars just make sense.
However, some may think of the new. A slightly tired family car can suggest a replacement with the soon-to-be-licensed son already in perspective.
Thanks to offers from financing for just one year with then replacement or return of the car to the dealershipthen, the new car could have more and more admirers at home.
As with used cars, there are hundreds of possibilities among new cars.
I have chosen three, from three different segments: city cars, all-rounders and compact cars for the whole family.
Volkswagen up !: not the most exciting, but the best city car
It would have been too trivial to talk to you about the Panda or the 500. So today I'm talking about the one that scores the most points in the challenge for the best city car: Volkswagen up!.
The little German "with the exclamation point" has an aesthetic that maybe won't make you fall in love.
Behind that square line, however, lies everything that is asked of a small city car.
Thanks to its 3,63 it is small, but spacious. The trunk is in fact one of the largest in the category with 251 liters, and even if it has only 4 seats, the occupants have a lot of space, especially for shoulders and head.
You can see that it was designed by those "tall" Germans.
The passenger compartment is also colored, very spacious for the external dimensions and made with beautiful materials and a lot of care.
The steering wheel and gear lever in leather, for example, are the same as those of the Golf, for a truly high-quality feel.
There is no infotainment screen.
A shame? No, because it has a ingenious smartphone holder that will let you use your phone as an entertainment center.
Compared to some rivals (also Italian ...) then the support has the air vent pointed at the phone.
In this way you can "shoot" cold air at the smartphone in order to avoid overheating with the sun and heat of the phone, which for some models causes the smartphone to enter "protection" making it temporarily unusable.
On the road, then, up! it is very easy to drive and park, it has everything you need and a really stiff and fun frame.
Even with the 60 HP engine you have a lot of fun, and it consumes very little.
For maximum savings, then, bet on eco-up! methane: with her, the running costs will be reduced by more than half compared to the petrol version.
The prices, however, are not exactly discounted: the price list reads a base price of 14 thousand euros, With the eco-up! set at 17.000.
Certainly not a few, but the discounts at the dealership are always important, and the proposed versions are always very equipped.
Skoda Fabia, l'outsider
Also in the B segment there are really many suitors. Renault Clio, Peugeot 208, Volkswagen Polo… not to mention the small B-SUVs that are becoming increasingly popular even among novice drivers.
The small car I chose, however, is a car with little incensation, but really valid: Skoda Fabia.
The small Czech car is not among the best-selling in Italy, and for this reason it deserves your look more than the other “usual notes”.
From an aesthetic point of view, Fabia is very simple but it is neat and compact, with the wheels at the corners of the body.
In some ways it is reminiscent of MINI products for totally horizontal roofs and overhangs so compact, and with the latest updates it has taken on even more personality, with the larger front grille and the large Skoda lettering on the rear.
From the basic set-up, then, there is everything you need: radio with smartphone interface, manual climate control, electric front windows.
The beauty of Fabia is that the options cost very little: Cruise Control 160 euros or just 480 euros the Safety package with blind spot assistant, hill start assistant and other safety features.
On the road, Fabia performs very well.
The little Czech is quiet, agile and snappy even with the smallest engine in the range, the 1.0 HP 60.
This engine may seem underpowered, but thanks to its low weight under 1000 kg it is smooth, lively and it consumes very little: the real 20 with a liter are easily reachable.
The price starts at around 15 thousand euros, as for the up !, and like the younger half-sister often enjoys really interesting discounts and benefits.
FIAT Tipo, for the whole family
The last car I recommend is an Italian, but definitely not what you expect: FIAT Type, in the 2-volume version.
The compact made in Turkey of the FCA Group is the largest car examined so far with its 4,36 meters, and for this very reason it is perfect as a novice-friendly family car.
In fact, Tipo has very “educated” engines in the range, with a maximum power of 120 HP and two 95 HP options.
Due to the low weight, however, we can only examine the turbodiesel version, equipped with the famous 1.3 MultiJet.
With the "remarkable" power of 70 kW, it's the most powerful car on the list, right on the maximum power limit. Precisely for this reason it is not only suitable for use as a first car.
Thanks to the 200 Nm of torque, is able to carry the whole family around without problems, and if necessary to be used by the freshly licensed home.
Tipo is also very spacious, comfortable and quiet.
Sure, the finishes are what they are, and the features aren't on par with some rivals.
Type, however, is respected with an easy and pleasant drive, low fuel consumption and a nice cut on costs.
The running costs, thanks to the almost utilitarian displacement, are very low, and the price list is really advantageous.
It starts at around 21 thousand euros, but with the very frequent promotions of FIAT dealers it is not impossible to go below 16 thousand euros.
Being a Euro 6D diesel, you are protected from any blockage for several years.
A wise choice for the whole family.
There is a car for novice drivers suitable for every personality
With the last italic (but not too much) proposal, I would say that we can declare concluded the vademecum on the best (and worst) cars for novice drivers.
For such an important moment it is essential to be able to do things right.
The first car is not just a means of having fun and becoming free. It is a means of work, of study, of survival at times. One way to grow up, one kilometer at a time.
This is why it is a decision not to be taken lightly.
Each car suits a different personality: I'm sure there's the first car out there that's right for you, you just need to look for it.
And follow my lead, of course.
