Wasteland 3 is the third installment of the famous strategy video game saga of inXile Entertainment, set in a post-apocalyptic world. Leading a handful of rangers skilled in the art of war, we will discover an America devastated by atomic bombs that hides as many threats as opportunities. Let's find out what Wasteland 3 has in store for us in our review.
Wasteland 3 Review
As per the tradition of the series, we will also drive in Wasteland 3 a group of rangers grappling with a new mission. The setting moves from the desert landscapes ofArizona in Wasteland 2, to the icy territories of Colorado perpetually covered with snow. Here, we will receive the help request from The Patriarch, a mysterious leader of a group of survivors, intent on restoring order and civilization to a world that has forgotten the meaning of these words. The request for help concerns "family matters”Which risk bringing the entire society of survivors into total chaos.
The protagonists of this story can be chosen by us. The game offers various Range pairsr with certain skills. For example, one of them is particularly suited to combat while the other two characters are true machine and computer experts. As per tradition, we will also have the possibility of create characters from scratch, give it names and shape history as we see fit.
Although the plot that we have just mentioned starts a story full of twists, it is up to us to choose its development. Through important choices or the way in which we decide to carry out the missions, we will be able to change the course of a well-written and never too boring plot.

I Colorado Ranger
Our rangers will have to face the many dangers born of the madness generated by the destruction of society as we know it. In this post-apocalyptic world, in fact, the ruthless bands of marauders go to waste and with them the bizarre alliances of groups intent on bringing even more destruction to the world. To combat these threats, Wasteland 3 brings back the ever-winning turn-based strategic gameplay of the previous chapters. We are in fact facing a old-school strategic role-playing game (RPG). The elements are all there: turn-based combat, isometric view from above, a tamps to drive, moves to calculate and lots of missions available.
At the beginning of each shift you can deploy your characters one at a time in a large "chessboard" where you can move, defend and attack. Ranged combat is the host with a variety of devastating firearms and explosives. Each action consumes an amount of action points of the character, so we will have to better calculate our next move to avoid finding ourselves in exposed situations without the possibility to move or defend ourselves. Similarly we will have to calculate the firing range of the characters, also given by the equipped weapon, to eliminate the enemy as quickly as possible.
In addition to the classic basic attacks, there is no shortage of interesting variants that increase the complexity of the game. In addition to a large number of weapons available and medikit with which to heal and empower ourselves, we can cope with unique skills of the characters. These allow us to hack enemy turrets and have them attack their team or improve affinity with ferocious animals and make them fight with us. Particularly interesting is also the importance given to the different heights in the map that can radically change the success of your shots. Do you have a sniper rifle? Climb up before shooting.
To everything RPG
Already from the creation of the characters, we immediately notice that the typical component of role-playing games it is very strong. It manifests itself in fact in ua set of parameters and statistics to be studied carefully to get the most out of the battles and dialogues. Each character owns indeed seven attributes main to which many join active skills e special talents to develop at each level up. A classic system of experience in fact, it manages the development of characters to whom it is appropriate to give their own specialization to better balance the group. With the right skills, we will be able to explore the game map, discover (and open) hidden treasures and interact with other non-player characters (NPCs).
That of the dialogue it is indeed an extremely important component in Wasteland 3. The NPCs are many and all with something to say. In addition to the dialogues, which carry on the main plot, we find in fact many other texts that allow us to undertake secondary missions or explore the history of the world of Wasteland even more, involving the players more and more. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this review, the game is not localized in Italian. Therefore, the texts and audio are entirely in English.
Most of the people to chat with are in the ranger base, sort of Central hub that we can visit when we want to continue the side missions, shop at the market or start exploring other areas of the map with an armored tank.

The embrace of the icy apocalypse
One of the strengths of Wasteland 3, as well as in the previous chapters, is the game setting. The destruction left by the explosion of nuclear bombs, combined with the glacial climate of Colorado, have managed to immerse us in thepost-apocalyptic atmosphere typical of 80s genre cinema. The quality of the 3D models and backgrounds has made a leap forward compared to the previous chapter of the saga, making the game even more immersive.
A small note of demerit must however be made to thegame interface (UI), Rather superficial and not at all intuitive. It will take a long time to understand all possible mechanics. This is an unexpected step back, probably due to the desire to make the game compatible, right away, with the Joystick.
On the other hand, we have not found (On PlayStation 4) no serious bugs or glitches.
Wasteland 3 Review: in conclusion.
Wasteland 3 managed to engage us with a simple but effective gameplayit's a'particular atmosphere and a degree of challenge, given by a particularly attentive AI, noteworthy. The flaws, such as the UI problems we have seen, are not lacking and so is the absence of the Italian language. This may disappoint those players who are approaching the genre for the first time.
Fans of strategic video games and therefore (hopefully) of the Wasteland saga will find what they are looking for: engaging battles, an interesting storyline and the old virtual warfare art.
